The Round That Changed My Heart
Last Monday, I played one of my better rounds.
My shots had been solid for several weeks, and I quietly started believing something.
"Maybe I don't need to practice at the driving range anymore."
Last week was busy.
The weather was very hot.
Rain was expected.
I had planned to practice, but I kept finding reasons not to go.
So today, I picked up my golf clubs for the first time in a week.
Golf gave me an immediate answer.
The front nine was one of my worst rounds this year.
Nothing felt natural.
My swing had lost its rhythm.
My confidence disappeared with every hole.
For a while, I wondered if I had forgotten how to play golf.
Even on the back nine, I started with two double bogeys.
I honestly thought,
"My swing is broken."
But golf is a funny game.
Instead of giving up, I slowed down.
I trusted my swing again.
Little by little, my rhythm returned.
I finished with a 91.
It wasn't a great score.
But today was never really about the score.
It was about humility.
Golf reminded me that confidence is important, but overconfidence is dangerous.
A good swing is not something we own forever.
It is something we take care of.
That is why I made a promise to myself.
"I will never become lazy about practice again."
Then something happened that touched me even more than my golf.
One of my playing partners is 74 years old.
He quietly shared a story during our round.
Last week, one of his old school friends came from Seoul to play golf with him.
Before they even reached the first tee, they were having lunch together.
Suddenly, his friend suffered a heart attack and passed away.
I was shocked just hearing the story.
I couldn't stop thinking about how unexpected life can be.
A joyful reunion became a heartbreaking farewell in just a few moments.
After a long silence, he smiled gently and said,
"Every day we can play golf is a gift."
He said he was thankful simply because he was healthy enough to walk the course.
Thankful for the beautiful scenery.
Thankful that the rain stayed away.
Thankful to spend another day with friends.
Those words stayed with me for the rest of the round.
By the end of the day, I realized something.
My score was 91.
But today was not about golf.
It was about remembering to stay humble.
It was about practicing with gratitude instead of pride.
And it was about never taking today for granted.
Because today itself is one of life's greatest gifts.
KR Summary
