They Understand More Than We Think. -

For almost ten years, Ruby and Rich had a favorite morning walking trail.

It was quiet before sunrise, with very few people around. We walked there almost every day, and it became part of our routine.

Two months ago, everything changed.

Ruby accidentally fell off a cliff during one of our walks. Thankfully, she recovered, but after that day, I never took that trail again.

It wasn't only because it was dangerous.

I simply didn't want every walk to begin with anxiety instead of joy.

Rich loved that trail even more than Ruby did.

Normally, when Rich wants to go somewhere, he lets me know. He gently but firmly pulls the leash toward the direction he wants. Sometimes I follow him. He enjoys exploring new paths.

But something surprised me.

For the past two months, every morning we have passed the entrance to that trail.

Not once has Rich tried to pull me toward it.

I don't know whether he remembers what happened that day or whether he simply senses how I feel.

Either way, he quietly follows me.

These days, Rich still enjoys discovering new paths.

Sometimes he pulls the leash with excitement, hoping we'll try somewhere we've never been before.

Sometimes I say, "No."

When I gently pull the leash back, he never argues.

He simply walks beside me.

Whenever that happens, I stop for a moment, pat his head, and say,

"Thank you, Rich."

Ruby is completely different.

For almost ten years, she has never pulled the leash to choose her own direction.

She simply walks wherever I walk.

The only time she strongly protests is when I leave her at home and take Rich for another walk.

The moment I close the gate, she cries as if the whole neighborhood should know.

When that happens, Rich hears her.

Without pulling the leash or asking to continue, he quietly turns around with me.

On our way home, I always tell him,

"Ruby is crying. I'm sorry we have to go back."

Then I pat his head again.

"Thank you."

And we walk home together.

Of course, life with two big dogs isn't always touching.

Sometimes neighbors tell me not to walk them near the apartment.

I always smile and say,

"I'm sorry. I'll be careful."

Then I quietly tell Ruby and Rich,

"Because of you two, your mom gets scolded quite often.
I guess I'll live a long life."

They simply look at me as if nothing happened.

A few minutes later, someone else smiles and says,

"They're beautiful dogs."

People often ask me if they should get a dog.

I usually smile and say,

"Only if you're ready to be scolded by your neighbors once in a while." 😄

KR Version

Just another ordinary morning walk with Ruby and Rich.(루비와 리치와 함께한 평범한 아침 산책)

Ruby, Rich, and I are all getting older.

But judging by our morning walks, none of us seems ready to admit it. 😊
