What Can We Turn Our Hardest Days Into?

For a long time, I thought I knew myself quite well.

I knew my strengths. I knew that I was good at negotiating and mediating between people. Even when I was working, I often thought, “If you need someone to find a middle ground, I can probably do that well.”

But as I get older, I have realized that knowing my abilities is not the same as truly understanding myself.

Sometimes, life has to happen first.

Only then do we understand why we behave the way we do, what truly matters to us, and what kind of person we have been trying to become all along.

Recently, I discovered something about myself that I had never clearly understood before.

When I was young, there was one thing I wished for.

“Please let me become someone who can help other people.”

Looking back, that simple wish explains a lot about me.

I have never had a strong desire for expensive things or luxury. Of course, I would be grateful if someone gave me something nice. But my first feeling would often be, “I hope I don't become a burden.”

If someone repeatedly gives to me, I feel uncomfortable if I cannot give something back.

I don't want relationships in which I constantly feel that I owe someone something.

But when I love someone, I have often given with my whole heart.

I didn't calculate how much I was giving.

At the time, I thought that was simply what love meant.

And perhaps I was this way even as a child.

My mother once said something to me that I have never forgotten.

She said,

“I hope you get married and have a child like you, so you can experience what happiness really feels like.”

I think that was my mother's way of telling me that I had been a warm and loving child to her.

I didn't understand the full meaning of those words when I was younger.

But now I do.

Maybe the little girl who wanted to become someone who could help others was already living that way in her own small world.

I think that desire to give, help, and care for people has always been a big part of who I am.

But I have also learned something much more difficult.

Helping someone and understanding someone are not always the same thing.

I spent a lot of time understanding myself, but I didn't always stop to ask what the other person might be thinking or feeling.

I sometimes assumed that other people saw things the way I did.

That was one of my weaknesses.

And life eventually taught me that lesson.

I made mistakes in relationships. I made a very painful mistake in choosing a life partner, too.

I wanted to believe that if my feelings were sincere, that would be enough.

Perhaps I was too pure.

Or perhaps I was simply too confident.

I had experienced many successes in my life, and because I had not experienced a major failure before, I sometimes trusted my own judgment too much.

I saw what I wanted to see.

I overlooked things I should have paid more attention to.

Now I know something I didn't know then:

Confidence is a wonderful strength, but confidence without enough reflection can turn into overconfidence.

And overconfidence can lead us to make very expensive mistakes.

But this is where I have come to understand what wisdom means to me.

I don't think wisdom means knowing everything.

I think wisdom is the ability to take something painful and ask:

“What can this teach me?”

When something negative happens, I try to find something positive inside it.

When I fail, I try to learn the lesson so I don't repeat the same mistake.

When I am hurt, I don't want to stay down forever. I want to become a little stronger because I went through it.

This doesn't mean pretending that pain is good.

Pain hurts.

Failure hurts.

Some experiences leave scars that never completely disappear.

But perhaps we can choose what those experiences become inside us.

They can become bitterness.

Or they can become wisdom.

They can make us afraid of life.

Or they can teach us to live more carefully and appreciate life more deeply.

For me, the second choice has gradually become more important.

And there is another principle I have always tried to live by:

Strong with the strong. Gentle with the weak.

I have never felt that I should become small or emotionally weak simply because someone was powerful.

When I meet a strong person, I actually become calmer.

I don't need to challenge them.

I don't need to prove anything.

I simply don't lose myself.

But when someone needs help, I want to use whatever strength I have to help rather than to show that I am stronger.

Maybe this is what “강강 약약” means to me.

Strength is not about overpowering someone.

Real strength is being able to remain yourself in front of someone powerful, while still being kind to someone who needs your help.

I think this has been part of me for a very long time.

And now, at 60, I am finally seeing how many pieces of my life connect.

My desire to help people.

My ability to mediate.

My tendency to love wholeheartedly.

My mistakes.

My painful failures.

My stubborn strength.

My gratitude for ordinary days.

They may all be connected to the same person I have been trying to become.

A wise person.

Not a perfect person.

Not someone who never makes mistakes.

But someone who can turn hardship into a lesson, pain into strength, and an ordinary day into happiness.

Today, I don't need a spectacular life to feel happy.

If I am healthy, peaceful, surrounded by people I care about, and able to enjoy the little things in my day, I already have something precious.

Perhaps I needed some painful experiences to understand that.

If I had never failed, maybe I would not appreciate an ordinary peaceful day this much.

If I had never been hurt, perhaps I would not understand the value of peace.

And if I had never made mistakes, perhaps I would still believe that confidence alone was enough.

So I don't want to erase my past.

I want to learn from it.

I want to carry the wisdom and leave the unnecessary pain behind.

I am still learning.

I am still discovering things about myself.

And even after all these years, I am still becoming the person I want to be.

I'm still a work in progress.

And maybe that's not a weakness at all.

Maybe that's one of the best things about being alive.

A Little Moment of Happiness This Morning

At 4:30 this morning, I took Ruby and Rich for their usual one-hour walk.

We were lucky enough to finish our walk without getting caught in the rain.

During our walk, I saw an elderly woman walking slowly with the help of a walking exercise machine. She looked like it was not easy for her, and I wondered if she might be afraid of my dogs.

So I deliberately greeted her in a warm, cheerful voice.

“Good morning!”

She smiled and replied,

“Oh my, you're up early! Taking your dogs for a walk at this hour?”

Her warm response made me smile.

It was such a small moment, but somehow it felt like a little gift from the morning.

Maybe happiness doesn't always come from something big.

Sometimes, it is simply a one-hour walk without rain, a kind greeting from a stranger, and a few warm words exchanged before sunrise.

That was one of my little pieces of happiness today.

KR Version

I'm still a work in progress.

Photo: After a gentle rain, the volcanic stone wall in my garden turns almost black, as if the rain has brought out a completely different beauty.

Today's Verdict

Sometimes, we don't need something new to find beauty.
We just need to see something familiar in a different way.
