What Happens When I Accidentally Drop the Leash? - 산책 중 목줄을 놓쳤을 때

Every now and then, I accidentally drop one of my dogs' leashes during our walk.

Whenever that happens, Ruby and Rich react in completely different ways.

Rich becomes the happiest dog in the world.

Dragging his long leash behind him, he takes off like a free spirit, running from one place to another as if he has been waiting for this moment all day.

At first, I always worry about two things.

First, I hope no one gets scared when they see a large dog running freely.

Rich has never shown aggression toward people, but I know not everyone is comfortable around big dogs.

Second, I worry that his long leash might get caught on a tree, a fence, or a rock.

If that happened, he might not be able to free himself.

The funny part is that Rich never really runs away.

About twenty or thirty minutes later, he always comes home by himself.

During those twenty minutes, I have absolutely no chance of catching him.

Even if I hold his favorite treats in my hand, freedom is simply more exciting.

He completely ignores me.

So I don't chase him anymore.

I just wait patiently near our front gate with one of his favorite snacks.

Eventually, the adventure ends.

His stomach wins.

And my happy boy walks home as if nothing happened.

Ruby is completely different.

The moment I accidentally drop her leash, she immediately stops walking.

Then she quietly turns around and looks at me.

Her eyes seem to say,

"You forgot something."

Or perhaps,

"Please pick up my leash so we can continue our walk."

Every single time, I smile and say,

"Thank you, Ruby."

People often tell me,

"You must have a hard time walking two large dogs."

The truth is...

Walking Ruby feels almost the same as walking no dog at all.

I've raised Ruby since the day she was born.

She naturally matches my walking pace and always keeps just the right distance from me.

She seems to know exactly where I'll be with every step.

Rich joined our family when he was about seven months old.

Maybe it's because he's a boy.

Maybe it's simply his adventurous personality.

He still pulls on the leash from time to time.

Of course, I remind him who's leading the walk.

He usually tests me once or twice...

Then he becomes the sweet, obedient boy I know.

Ruby follows with quiet trust.

Rich follows after satisfying his curiosity.

Different personalities.

Different walking styles.

The same love.

And every walk reminds me that even dogs, just like people, each have their own beautiful way of seeing the world.

Today's Verdict

Love doesn't always look the same.

Sometimes it walks quietly beside you.

Sometimes it runs ahead and comes back with a smile.

가끔 산책을 하다 보면 내 실수로 목줄을 놓칠 때가 있다.

그럴 때마다 루비와 리치는 정말 정반대의 행동을 한다.

리치는 세상에서 가장 신난 강아지가 된다.

긴 목줄을 질질 끌고 마치 자유를 기다렸다는 듯 여기저기 신나게 뛰어다닌다.

그럴 때마다 나는 두 가지가 가장 걱정된다.

첫째는, 큰 개가 뛰어다니는 모습을 보고 주변 사람들이 놀라지 않을까 하는 것이다.

리치는 사람을 공격하는 아이는 아니지만, 보는 사람은 놀랄 수도 있으니까.

둘째는, 긴 목줄이 나무나 돌, 울타리에 걸려 혼자 빠져나오지 못하는 상황이 생기지 않을까 하는 걱정이다.

신기한 것은 리치는 절대로 집을 잊지 않는다는 것이다.

20~30분쯤 지나면 언제나 스스로 집으로 돌아온다.

그전까지는 내 시야에 보여도 절대로 잡히지 않는다.

예전에는 쫓아다녔지만 이제는 그러지 않는다.

리치가 가장 좋아하는 간식을 하나 들고 대문 앞에서 조용히 기다린다.

20분쯤 지나면 자유를 충분히 즐겼는지,

그제야 간식이 생각나는 모양이다.

아무 일도 없었다는 듯 내게 걸어온다.

반면 루비는 정말 다르다.

내가 실수로 목줄을 놓치는 순간,

루비는 바로 걸음을 멈춘다.

그리고 조용히 나를 바라본다.

마치,

"엄마, 목줄 놓쳤어요."

또는,

"얼른 잡고 우리 산책 계속해요."

라고 말하는 것 같다.

그럴 때마다 나는 웃으며 말한다.

"루비, 고마워."

가끔 사람들은 말한다.

"큰 개 두 마리 산책시키려면 정말 힘들겠어요."

하지만 실제로는 그렇지 않다.

루비와 산책하는 것은 마치 목줄이 없는 것처럼 편하다.

루비는 태어나던 날부터 내가 키운 아이다.

내 걸음 속도를 정확하게 알고,

항상 적당한 간격을 유지하며 함께 걷는다.

반면 리치는 생후 7개월쯤 우리 가족이 되었다.

남자아이라 그런지,

원래 성격이 자유로운 건지,

가끔 목줄을 당기며 앞장서려고 한다.

그래서 산책할 때 혼나는 것은 늘 리치다.

그래도 한두 번 신나게 당기고 나면,

금세 내 말을 잘 듣는 착한 아들로 돌아온다.

루비는 믿음으로 내 옆을 걷고,

리치는 호기심을 마음껏 채운 뒤 내 곁으로 돌아온다.

성격은 달라도,

둘 다 나에게는 너무나 소중한 가족이다.

산책을 하다 보면 새삼 느낀다.

사람마다 성격이 다르듯, 강아지들도 저마다 세상을 사랑하는 방식이 다르다는 것을.
