The Same Sense of Social Responsibility—So What Has Changed? -

These days, I sometimes ask myself:

“What has really changed between the person I was when I was young and the person I am today?”

When it comes to social responsibility, perhaps not as much as I might think.

When I was younger, I worked hard, kept my promises, and tried not to cause trouble or inconvenience for others.

I did not always think deeply about why I should live that way.

I simply believed that I should work hard, be responsible, and do my best.

Looking back, however, I realize that those habits of responsibility and sincerity helped me grow into the person I am today.

So what is different now?

I think I can see the bigger picture.

I still believe in social responsibility, but I have learned that I also have a responsibility to myself.

Golf Can Reveal a Lot About People

In Korea, golf is not just an individual sport. A round of golf is usually a social activity.

When you play 18 holes with other people, you spend several hours together. You share a cart, wait for one another, watch each other's shots, and interact with the caddie throughout the round.

And sometimes, golf reveals a side of a person that you don't normally see.

There was a woman I played golf with for a while.

She was actually a good person in many ways.

But somehow, golf brought out a different side of her.

One day, after our golf bags had been loaded onto the cart, she asked the caddie to rearrange the bags because hers was not positioned on the outside where she could easily take her clubs out.

Her reason was that she was a member of the golf club while the other three of us were guests.

I remember thinking, Does that really matter that much?

Another time, we were playing at a beautiful, prestigious golf course during fern season.

She loved picking bracken. (** bracken: 고사리 , a wild edible plant that grows in Jeju)

So, on almost every hole, she would disappear somewhere to pick them.

The problem was that the other three golfers and the caddie had to wait for her.

When I finally said something about it, she simply said,

“Picking bracken is more important to me than playing golf.”

Haha.

Then I thought, If picking bracken is more important, why not go to Hallasan and pick bracken there?

Why make three other people and the caddie wait for you at a golf course?

And there was another incident.

On the green, the caddie read the break and placed her ball accordingly.

But the putt didn't go in.

She became extremely angry with the caddie.

“You didn't read the break correctly!”

I remember thinking to myself,

“Is the caddie supposed to be a god?” 😂

Even if the caddie reads the line perfectly, the golfer can still fail to roll the ball properly.

Ultimately, I am the one making the stroke.

I quietly went over to the caddie and said,

“She's a little sensitive, so please don't take it personally. I'm sorry.”

The woman wasn't a bad person.

She had many good qualities.

But after playing golf together several times, I realized something:

We simply weren't a good match as golf partners.

Eventually, I stopped contacting her.

Not because I decided that she was a bad person.

I simply realized that, at this stage of my life, I can choose who I want to spend my time with.

As We Get Older, Responsibility Doesn't Disappear. It Expands.

When I was young, social responsibility mostly meant doing my part well.

Doing my job properly.

Taking care of my family.

Fulfilling my responsibilities in society.

But now I see that responsibility can mean much more than that.

It means not treating people poorly simply because I have a certain position or status.

It means not making other people wait just because something I want to do is more important to me.

It means not blaming someone else for my own results or mistakes.

And it means being able to say, “I'm sorry,” when my actions make someone uncomfortable.

These small things are also forms of social responsibility.

And now that I am 60, I want to add one more thing:

Responsibility for myself.

Taking care of my body.

Using my time wisely.

Continuing to learn and grow.

Making time for the things I genuinely enjoy.

And taking care of myself so that I can still play golf and enjoy an active life when I am 80.

I believe that is also a responsibility—to my future self.

When I Was Young, Responsibility Helped Build Me. Now It Helps Me Choose My Life.

When I was young, I didn't always understand the bigger picture.

I simply knew that I had to work hard, be responsible, and keep moving forward.

But those years of responsibility helped me become the person I am today.

For that, I am grateful to my younger self.

Now, however, something has changed.

I can look at life from a little farther away.

I am beginning to understand how to live a richer life without giving up my sense of responsibility.

I can work hard without exhausting myself.

I can treat people well without feeling that I have to be close to everyone.

I can choose where to spend my time and energy.

And I can find small moments of happiness in an ordinary day.

Perhaps this is one of the things I have learned after 60.

So, This Is How I Want to Live

I still want to live with the same sense of social responsibility I had when I was young.

But now I want to see the bigger picture.

I want to be responsible toward society, respectful toward other people, and responsible for my own life as well.

I don't want to be lazy.

I want to be sincere.

And, if possible, I want to live beautifully. 😊

Golf is no different.

Rather than being the golfer with the best score, I would rather be the golfer who makes the people playing with her feel comfortable.

I want to treat the caddie with respect.

I want to laugh when my playing partner makes a mistake.

I want to take responsibility when I make my own mistake instead of blaming someone else.

And I want the people who play with me to remember the day as a pleasant experience.

That, to me, is social responsibility on the golf course.

And perhaps it is also the kind of life I want to live now.

When I was young, responsibility pushed me forward.

Now, I am learning how to use that same sense of responsibility to live a richer and more meaningful life.

Turning 60 doesn't mean having fewer responsibilities.

Perhaps it means finally understanding how to carry them more wisely—

including the responsibility to live a good life for yourself.

So today, I will try not to be too lazy,

to live sincerely,

and, if possible,

to live beautifully. 😊❤️

KR Version

Life after 60 is not about having fewer responsibilities.
It is about learning to carry them more wisely — including the responsibility to live a good life for yourself.
