There are some memories that stay with you—not because they were perfect, but because they meant something.
Years ago, I drove alone from San Francisco to San Diego.
It was about a nine-hour journey, just me on the road, heading toward a one-week program with the USGTF-United States Golf Teachers Federation, staying there with other participants.
It wasn’t easy. The schedule was intense, and every day demanded focus, discipline, and energy. But I was all in. I wanted to grow—not just as a golfer, but as someone who could teach the game.
By the end of the week, I successfully completed the program and passed the written exam. That moment felt solid—like something I had truly earned.
The playing test, though, was another challenge.
At the time, even female participants had to shoot 82 from the white tees to pass. I gave it everything I had… and finished with an 86.
** FYI - since 2023, feamle ones has shot 82 from red tees to pass.
Close—but not quite enough.
So I didn’t pass both at the same time. And yes, that part stayed with me for a while.
But here’s what mattered more.
I passed the theory exam and earned my official golf teaching certification from the USGTF.
Looking back, it wasn’t about being perfect.
It was about driving nine hours alone for something I believed in, staying the course for a full week, and walking away with something real.
Sometimes, growth doesn’t come as a perfect score.
It comes as a quiet step forward.
And that was enough.
