My Little Car and the Things That Truly Matter - 작은 차와 나에게 정말 소중한 것들
One day, I was enjoying a round of golf at a beautiful golf course when my phone suddenly rang.
A manager said,
"Could you move your car to another parking lot? That car is not allowed to park in the customers' parking area."
I smiled and simply answered,
"I'm playing golf now.^^"
Yes, I was the golfer.
I still drive my little Kia Morning.
A few days ago, I was playing golf with a PD. He happily told me that he had bought a used driver for about $120 and that he was hitting the ball wonderfully with it.
I smiled and said,
"Well, I spent about $5,000 on my new golf equipment, and now I go to the golf course more often and enjoy golf even more.^^"
He looked at my clubs and replied,
"Wow, that's really nice equipment."
The funny thing is that he drives a Lexus, while I still drive my little Kia Morning.
People often judge others by what they drive.
But my story is a little different.
This little car was originally chosen by my father before he passed away. He drove it only a few times and then left it to me.
At that time, I was driving a slightly bigger car, but it was already ten years old and it was time to replace it. So I simply kept this small gray car.
It may look plain and ordinary, but somehow it fits my life perfectly.
I live on a small island called Jeju. I rarely need to drive fast, and I don't even use highways. Driving at 60 km/h is more than enough for my life here.
To be honest, I still like red sports cars.^^
But as I have grown older, I have realized something important.
Ordinary things can be very safe and comforting.
This little car feels like the last safe country car that my father gave me.
I don't think my choices are better than anyone else's.
Some people love luxury cars, some enjoy traveling, and others spend money on different hobbies. We all invest our money and energy in the things that make our lives meaningful.
I am one of those people too.
For me, those things have been education, experiences, golf, and a peaceful life.
I don't spend money to impress people.
I spend money on what truly enriches my life.
A car doesn't tell people who I am.
The way I live my life does.
And honestly, I think a small car can carry a very happy person, beautiful memories, and a father's love.^^
Sometimes I think about buying another car.
But then I realize that my little gray Morning fits my life perfectly.
It doesn't try to impress anyone.
It quietly supports my everyday verdict:
Peace within my life, safely on a small island, Jeju.

예전에 골프장에서 라운드를 하던 중, 고객 주차장에 제 차를 세울 수 없으니 다른 곳으로 옮겨 달라는 전화를 받은 적이 있습니다.
저는 웃으며 말했습니다.
"저 지금 골프 치고 있는데요.^^"
저는 아직도 작은 기아 모닝을 타고 다닙니다.
며칠 전에는 함께 골프를 치던 PD 한 분이 중고 드라이버를 샀다며 즐거워하셨고, 저는 새 골프 장비에 투자한 덕분에 골프가 더 즐거워졌다고 이야기했습니다. 그분은 제 장비를 보며 좋은 장비라고 말씀하셨습니다.
재미있는 것은 그분은 외제차를 타고 다니시고, 저는 여전히 작은 경차를 타고 있다는 것입니다.
하지만 사실 이 차에는 조금 특별한 이야기가 있습니다.
이 모닝은 아버지께서 돌아가시기 전에 선택하신 차였습니다. 몇 번 타보시지도 못한 채 제게 남겨주신 마지막 선물 같은 차입니다.
저도 빨간 스포츠카를 좋아합니다. 하지만 나이가 들수록 화려한 것보다 나에게 잘 맞고, 나를 안전하게 지켜주는 평범한 것의 소중함을 알게 되었습니다.
그래서 이 작은 회색 차는 저에게 단순한 경차가 아닙니다.
아버지가 제주에서 살아갈 딸에게 남겨주신 '안전한 시골차' 같은 느낌입니다.
물론 사람마다 행복의 기준은 다릅니다. 어떤 분은 좋은 차를 좋아하고, 어떤 분은 여행이나 다른 취미를 즐깁니다. 모두 각자의 방식으로 자신이 소중하게 생각하는 것에 돈과 에너지를 쓰며 살아갑니다.
저 역시 그중 한 사람일 뿐입니다.
다만 저에게는 그것이 유학과 경험, 골프, 그리고 평화로운 일상이었습니다.
생각해 보면, 작은 차도 아주 행복한 사람과 아름다운 추억, 그리고 아버지의 사랑을 충분히 태울 수 있는 것 같습니다.^^
가끔은 다른 차를 타고 싶다는 생각도 듭니다.
하지만 한 번 더 생각해 보면, 이 작은 회색 모닝이 제 삶에 가장 잘 어울리는 것 같습니다.
눈에 띄지 않게, 조용히, 그리고 안전하게.
이 차는 제가 매일 내리는 작은 결론을 묵묵히 지지해 주는 것 같습니다.
제주라는 작은 섬에서, 내 삶 안의 평화를 안전하게 지키며 살아가기.
