Why Tiger and Rory Are More Fun Than Me
If someone asked me who my two favorite professional golfers are, the answer would be easy:
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
Not because they are perfect.
Not because they always win.
But because they are willing to attempt shots that most people would never even consider.
A ball buried in the trees?
Many golfers would punch out sideways and take their medicine.
Tiger and Rory often look at the tiny gap between the branches and think,
"I can get through that."
Sometimes it works.
Sometimes it doesn't.
But it is always exciting.
That spirit of challenge is one of the reasons I love watching them play.
The funny thing is that my own golf has become the exact opposite.^^
These days, if I find myself in trouble, my brain usually says:
"Angie, just get the ball back into play and move on."
No hero shots.
No miracles.
No YouTube highlights.
Just boring, sensible golf.
And honestly, it works.
My scorecard is usually happier because of it.
But here is something I have learned after many years of golf.
There is a difference between playing for today's score and playing for future improvement.
If a young amateur golfer wants to lower their handicap significantly, they cannot always choose the safest option.
Sometimes they need to try the risky shot.
Sometimes they need to attempt the carry over the water.
Sometimes they need to hit driver instead of laying up.
Will they fail?
Of course.
Probably quite often.
But that is how limits are discovered.
And once limits are discovered, they can be pushed.
Professional golfers understand this better than anyone.
The reason Tiger changed golf forever was not only his talent.
He changed the culture.
Before Tiger, golfers were golfers.
After Tiger, golfers became athletes.
Strength training.
Fitness programs.
Nutrition.
Recovery.
Gym workouts.
Suddenly, all of these became normal parts of professional golf.
Today, almost every top player follows that path.
Tiger did not just win tournaments.
He changed what golfers believed was possible.
Rory carries that same spirit.
When he stands on a tee box, he rarely looks afraid.
He plays aggressively.
He trusts his swing.
He accepts the possibility of failure.
And because of that, he often produces shots that make golf fans jump out of their chairs.
Of course, watching golf and playing golf are two completely different things.
When I watch Rory, I think:
"Go for it!"
When I stand over my own ball, I think:
"Maybe let's not do that..."
Very different philosophies. 😂
The older I get, the more I appreciate peaceful golf.
I enjoy good company.
Beautiful fairways.
A quiet walk under the 제주 sky.
A solid straight shot.
And maybe a cup of coffee afterward.
That is enough.
But I am still grateful that players like Tiger and Rory exist.
They remind us that golf is not only about avoiding mistakes.
Sometimes it is about chasing possibilities.
Today, I play safer than I did twenty years ago.
But if a young golfer asked me how to improve, I would probably tell them this:
Don't be reckless.
But don't be too comfortable either.
Because handicaps are rarely lowered inside a comfort zone.
And perhaps life works the same way.⛳💛
Verdict: Play wisely, but never lose your courage to challenge yourself.
KR Summary
Happiness often lives in comfort.Growth often lives in challenge.A good life needs both. 💛
