Lack and Pain Often Become the Foundation of Great Success in Golf & Life.
Golf may be one of the most honest games in the world.
It constantly reveals what is still missing.
No matter how many years we play,
no matter how good we become,
golf never lets us feel completely finished.
At the driving range, everything can feel easy.
The swing feels smooth.
The contact sounds perfect.
The ball flies exactly where we want it to go.
For a brief moment, we think:
Maybe I’ve finally figured it out.
And then we step onto the course.
Suddenly, the same swing feels unfamiliar.
The lie of the ball is different.
The slope beneath our feet changes.
The wind shifts.
Our tempo disappears.
One day, we play a single-digit round.
Another day, we struggle and finish in the 90s.
Golf constantly reminds us of our lack.
A small flaw in rhythm.
A tiny loss of balance.
A moment of doubt.
Even one missing piece can change everything.
But perhaps that is why golf teaches us something deeper.
Recently, I watched the final round of a singing competition.
As each finalist shared the story behind their songs,
I noticed something striking:
No one came from a perfectly complete life.
Behind every beautiful performance,
there was some kind of lack.
Past failures.
Difficult circumstances.
Moments of feeling unseen or not enough.
And somehow, those very struggles had given their voices depth.
Their lack had become their strength.
It made me think of my own life.
As a child, I often felt like the smallest and least noticeable among my sisters.
They were taller.
They seemed prettier.
And I quietly carried that feeling of not quite being enough.
That may be why I loved The Ugly Duckling so much.
I believed I was the ugly duckling—
not yet fully grown,
but becoming.
That feeling pushed me.
To study harder.
To work with more focus.
To keep building something inside myself.
Looking back, I can see it now:
What felt like 부족함 was not a weakness.
It was fuel.
And golf feels the same.
Every imperfect shot shows us something missing.
Every difficult round reveals another lesson.
Golf never gives us perfection for long.
But maybe that is the gift.
Because if everything were already complete,
we would stop learning.
We would stop adjusting.
We would stop growing.
Golf reveals what is missing—
not to discourage us,
but to keep us moving forward.
Perhaps life does the same.
Sometimes our lack is not something to hide.
Sometimes it is exactly what shapes our best swing—
and our best self
KR Summary
