Friendships Have Seasons. -
When I first lived in the United States, I experienced a bit of culture shock.
People told me that they had different groups of friends for different activities.
Golf friends.
Work friends.
Travel friends.
Coffee friends.
At that time, I couldn't understand it.
In Korea, when we become close friends, we often try to do everything together. We study together, travel together, exercise together, and spend weekends together.
I thought that was what real friendship meant.
Now, almost twenty years later, I finally understand.
These days, most of my free time naturally revolves around golf.
I have friends I play golf with.
I have friends I enjoy having dinner or coffee with.
I have people I simply greet at the driving range.
And somehow, that feels completely natural.
To be honest, I hesitated to write this.
Some people might think this sounds selfish.
But that's not what I mean.
Until about five years ago, I was the leader of a group of eight close hometown friends. We had known each other for many years, and I organized our gatherings for nearly seven years.
Those were wonderful years.
But as time passed, I realized that our lives were moving in different directions.
No one was wrong.
We simply wanted different things from life.
So I made the difficult decision to step away from the group.
I still keep in touch with one or two friends, and I'm grateful for them.
At first, I thought having fewer friends would lead to a lonely life.
Instead, something unexpected happened.
New friendships naturally entered my life.
Not because I was looking for them.
But because my life had changed.
Today, my relationships feel lighter.
There is less pressure.
More freedom.
More respect for each other's space.
I no longer believe one person has to share every part of my life.
Different people enrich different parts of it.
Looking back, my old friendships were not better.
My new friendships are not better either.
They simply belong to different seasons of my life.
Maybe friendship doesn't have to last forever in the same form.
Maybe it only needs to be genuine while we are walking the same road.
Friendships have seasons.
Some stay for a lifetime.
Others stay for just one season.
Looking back,
I realize they all came into my life for a reason.
Today's Verdict
Friendships don't always end because something went wrong.
Sometimes they simply change because we do.
KR Version
Today's Verdict
