How to Shrink My Stomach Without Giving Up the Joy of Eating-
Lately, there is one thing I keep noticing whenever I look at my photos.
**My belly. **(smile)
The rest of my body seems fine, but why is my stomach getting a little bigger these days?
So this morning, I sat down and really thought about my eating habits.
And I think I found the answer.
But first, I have to admit something.
I really, really love food.
I have always had a good appetite.
I remember one time when I was in college and living with my older sister.
One day, I suddenly couldn't stop thinking about jajangmyeon, Korean-Chinese black bean noodles.
I told my sister,
"I really want jajangmyeon."
It was raining, but we actually went to a Chinese restaurant together to eat it.
That's the kind of person I am.
When I want a certain food, I usually know exactly what I want.
I enjoy buying good ingredients, making the food I want, and sitting down to enjoy it by myself.
And even when I get sick, my appetite hardly changes.
Usually, when people catch a cold or get sick, they lose their appetite.
Not me. (smile)
I can still eat my meals normally, even when I have a cold.
I have always felt that I recover pretty quickly because I keep eating well.
And this reminds me of a funny conversation I once had with a friend who lives in San Jose.
Her son was very healthy, but she told me that whenever he caught a cold, he would sometimes say,
"I have a cold. I want a McDonald's hamburger."
And then he would finish the whole hamburger. (smile)
We laughed so hard.
We realized that there really are people whose appetite doesn't change even when they are sick.
Apparently, I'm one of them. (smile)
Actually, these days, I am grateful that I still have a good appetite.
Being able to enjoy food and have an appetite is something to be thankful for.
So I don't want to give that up.
The problem is not really my main meal.
I have already been eating about half the amount of rice I used to eat for a long time.
The real problem seems to come after my main meal.
I eat my meal, and then I have fruit, a little sweet bread, and coffee.
And quite often, I eat all of them at once.
Why?
Because I am busy.
I sometimes think,
"I won't have time to eat later, so I should eat it now."
So I put everything in at once. (smile)
And then...
I feel way too full.
My stomach feels heavy and uncomfortable.
When I really thought about it, I realized something.
It wasn't necessarily that my main meal was too big.
It was everything I ate after the main meal that made the total amount much bigger.
If I had eaten the fruit later, enjoyed my coffee a little later, and had the bread sometime during the afternoon, I probably wouldn't have felt so full.
Maybe my problem isn't what I eat.
Maybe it's how much I put in at one time.
Then I remembered my life in America.
When I went to the U.S. to study in my late 30s, I actually ate quite well.
I studied a lot and spent most of my time sitting. I wasn't exercising much during the day.
But strangely enough, my belly didn't stick out.
Before I went to America, when I was working for a company in Korea, I actually had a little belly.
But while I was studying in America, my waist became slim again.
How did that happen?
I think I know now.
My eating habits were completely different.
America is a huge country, so driving was a big part of everyday life.
Whenever I went somewhere, I often had to drive for at least an hour on the highway.
And unlike Korea, there weren't convenience stores everywhere where I could simply stop and grab something whenever I wanted.
So whenever I left home, I usually put some food in my bag.
A banana.
An apple.
Coffee.
Sometimes a sandwich.
Then I would eat when I got hungry.
Maybe I ate a banana in the car.
Maybe I had an apple while studying.
Maybe I had my sandwich later.
I ate enough food, but I didn't eat everything at once.
I was naturally spreading my food throughout the day.
And I think that may have been one reason my waist stayed smaller, even though I wasn't exercising very much.
So I decided to try something again.
Not a diet.
Not giving up my favorite foods.
And definitely not giving up the joy of eating.
I will keep eating my main meal.
I will keep eating fruit.
I will keep drinking coffee.
And if I want a little sweet bread, I'll have it.
But I won't eat everything at once.
I'll simply spread it out.
Maybe I'll have fruit a little later.
I'll enjoy my coffee separately.
And if I still want some bread, I'll have it in the afternoon.
In other words,
I don't want to eat less.
I want to eat smarter.
When I say I want to "shrink my stomach," I don't mean that I can literally make my stomach smaller overnight.
What I really mean is that I want to get used to not putting so much food into my stomach at one time.
I think that might be much easier for me than trying to give up the foods I love.
I also have another reason.
I teach students, so I don't want to be the kind of teacher who looks heavy and sluggish in front of her students. (smile)
But at the same time, I don't want to give up one of my everyday pleasures.
I love making delicious food.
I love eating fruit.
I love coffee.
And I love the simple happiness of sitting down and enjoying something I made myself.
So why should I choose between enjoying food and taking care of my body?
Maybe I can have both.
Keep the joy of eating.
Just don't eat everything at once.
That's my new experiment.
I started this morning.
Let's see what happens over the next two weeks. (smile)
Maybe I don't need another diet.
Maybe I just need to remember something I already knew from my life in America:
Sometimes, it's not about eating less.
It's about giving my body more time between bites.
And I'm going to keep enjoying my food.^^
After all, I still might suddenly want jajangmyeon on a rainy day. (smile)
