What Can Two Women Possibly Talk About for Three Hours? -
Yesterday, I met a close older friend for lunch. We hadn’t seen each other for a little while, so we had a lot to talk about.
These days, one of our favorite topics is surprisingly simple: weeds. 😂
Yes, weeds.
We talk about how to get rid of them, how quickly they grow, and how much easier life becomes when the weeds are under control. Then, naturally, our conversation moves to the trees we grow in our fields.
She grows olive trees, and I have quite a bit of experience growing Hwangchil trees. Since my mother was a farmer, I grew up hearing and learning a lot about farming, so I sometimes find myself giving her little pieces of advice.
For example, when I first planted my Hwangchil trees, I learned how important it was to help the roots settle well into the ground.
Jeju is famous for its strong winds. If a young tree isn't planted firmly enough and its roots aren't well established, the tree can keep shaking in the wind—and sometimes, it may not survive.
So there we were, sitting in a beautiful café with a carefully prepared meal and coffee, talking mostly about trees and weeds.
It made me laugh.
But I also realized how wonderful it is to have someone with whom I can talk about these seemingly ordinary things.
We have known each other for about seven years. We live in the same neighborhood, and we meet at least two or three times a month.
She has a home in both Seoul and Jeju, with her family in Seoul. She spends much of her time in Jeju, where she paints, writes, travels, and enjoys the island she loves so much.
She is warm-hearted, speaks thoughtfully, and has a very clear sense of how she wants to live her life.
In many ways, she is a lot like me.
Before we knew it, three hours had passed.
What I learn from people older than me
She is five years older than I am.
Whenever I spend time with her, I naturally find myself thinking about my own life five years from now.
What kind of person do I want to be?
How do I want to spend my days?
What kind of things will still make me happy?
I have always enjoyed spending time with younger friends. Their energy is bright, lively, and refreshing.
But spending time with people a little older than me gives me something different.
Sometimes, it feels like looking at a living guidebook for the next chapter of my life.
I don't need them to tell me what to do.
Just seeing how they live, what they value, and what makes them happy gives me ideas about my own future.
And that, I think, is one of the beautiful things about getting older.
We keep learning—not only from books or classes, but from people around us.
A rainy day that changed its mind
There was another funny little part to yesterday.
The forecast said it was going to rain all day, so I was actually thinking about canceling our lunch.
Then suddenly, the sun came out.
So I quickly went to the driving range, got some exercise, and headed out to meet her for a late lunch.
Afterward, we went to our current favorite café, To More Low.
We drank coffee, looked at the beautiful clouds and blue sky, and enjoyed the view of the Soesokkak sea.
It turned out to be one of those days that reminds me:
The weather forecast isn't always the final word.
Sometimes, you just have to look outside and see for yourself.
And sometimes, the best days happen because you didn't cancel your plans.
Today is the last day of my vacation, and ironically, it is raining heavily outside again.
If the rain stops after 3 p.m., I'll take my dogs for a walk and go to the driving range for a little golf practice.
Tomorrow morning, I have a nine-hole golf gathering with my band.
So, as usual, I'm simply trying to make the most of today.
Looking back, I think I know what two women can possibly talk about for three hours.
Trees. Weeds. Family. Life. The future.
And somehow, everything in between.
Maybe that's what a good friendship is.
You don't need a special topic.
You just need someone who understands your way of looking at life—and with whom three hours can disappear before you even notice.
KR Version

“Somehow, our favorite topic these days is weeds.”
