What Made Me Feel So Happy Today? -

This morning, I was sitting in my living room, working on my notebook.

I was quietly focused on my computer when I suddenly felt something.

I looked up.

Ruby was sitting on her bed, watching me.

It wasn't unusual. Ruby often watches me like that.

But this time, I stopped what I was doing and looked back into her eyes.

We just looked at each other for a brief moment.

Maybe a minute.

Nothing special was happening.

She didn't want food.

She didn't want to go for a walk.

She wasn't asking me for anything.

She was simply looking at me.

And I looked back at her warmly.

Then I turned back to my computer and continued writing.

About a minute later, I happened to look over at her again.

Ruby's head had slowly fallen down.

She was already asleep.

I smiled.

That's all that happened.

But somehow, that one little moment touched me deeply.

To be honest, I wasn't always someone who particularly loved dogs.

When Ruby and Rich first became part of my life, my thoughts were much simpler.

I lived in a detached house, so I thought having dogs would be practical. They might help protect the house.

And, of course, I knew I had a responsibility to take care of them.

That was about it.

But somehow, more than ten years have passed.

And now I realize that I was only seeing one side of our relationship.

I thought I was the one taking care of them.

But they have also been quietly adding something to my life that I never planned for.

They have taught me that animals can communicate with us in ways that don't require words.

Sometimes through their eyes.

Sometimes through the way they wait for us.

Sometimes simply by staying nearby.

And lately, as I write more about my everyday life, I have started noticing these things much more deeply.

I think my dogs have made my life emotionally richer.

They have added a part of life that I never knew I was missing.

And then, three days ago, something happened that made me think about this even more.

The Little Bird I Couldn't Walk Past

Between two of my teaching sessions, I took Ruby and Rich outside for what was supposed to be a very quick five-minute bathroom break.

I was busy.

A student was already waiting for my next lesson, so I really didn't have much time.

As I walked between the parked cars near my house, I noticed something white on the ground.

At first, I thought it was a piece of white ice cream.

It was fairly large, and I immediately pulled the dogs' leashes closer because I didn't want them to eat it.

But then I looked again.

It wasn't ice cream.

It was a baby bird.

And it was alive.

It must have fallen from its nest.

I had two dogs in my hands, a student waiting for me, and only a few minutes before my lesson.

So I walked quickly back home.

I tried to start my class.

But I couldn't concentrate.

I kept thinking about that little bird lying between the cars.

I finally apologized to my student and said,

"I'm sorry, but there's a baby bird outside. The police station is right next to my house, so I think I need to take it there first."

Then I went back outside.

The mother bird was still there.

She kept flying around the baby and crying.

She clearly knew her baby was there.

But there was nothing she could do.

I stood there for a while, wondering if I should just leave.

Maybe the mother would somehow take care of it.

Maybe I should trust nature and go back to my class.

But the mother bird kept crying.

And the baby bird was still hopping around between the cars.

It was over 30°C that day.

I kept thinking,

If I just walk away, this little bird may not survive.

So I decided to do something.

I went back home and brought a hat and a handkerchief.

The baby bird kept hopping around, so it wasn't easy to catch.

Finally, I carefully picked it up with the handkerchief and placed it in my hat.

Then I took it to the police station nearby.

They connected me with 119 and a bird rescue organization so the little bird could receive proper care.

Only after everything was arranged did I finally go back home and start my lesson.

And Then I Found Out What Happened

While I was writing this story, I became curious about what had happened to the little bird.

So I contacted the person who had helped with its rescue.

And I learned something I never expected.

The little bird was a Brown-eared Bulbul with albinism.

Its unusual white appearance was caused by albinism.

I was told that albino birds can have a difficult time surviving in the wild.

For now, the little bird is being safely cared for together with other healthy Brown-eared Bulbuls.

Once it becomes strong and healthy enough, they will decide whether it can be released back into the wild or whether it would be safer for someone to care for it.

Then the rescuer told me something that stayed with me.

"If you hadn't rescued the bird, it probably wouldn't have survived."

They thanked me for helping.

But I found myself saying,

"No, I'm the one who should thank you. You're the one doing such wonderful work for these birds."

And I truly meant it.

I only happened to notice a little white shape between two cars.

I only happened to stop.

The real work was done by the people who knew how to care for that tiny life and gave it another chance.

Still, I feel strangely connected to that little bird now.

I don't know what will happen to it.

Maybe one day it will fly back into the wild.

Maybe, because of its albinism, it will find a safe home with someone who can care for it.

I just hope it grows strong and healthy.

And I'm grateful that, for a brief moment on a very hot afternoon, our paths crossed.

Looking back, I find all of this strangely meaningful.

More than ten years ago, I never imagined that having two dogs would become such a meaningful part of my life.

I thought I was simply taking responsibility for two animals.

But now, they have become something much more than that.

They have given me countless little moments that I never planned.

A warm look from Ruby.

Rich quietly protecting my golf clothes overnight.

A morning walk.

A funny moment.

A reason to go outside.

And sometimes, even the chance to notice another little life that needed help.

I think that's one of the unexpected gifts of living with animals.

They don't just become part of your life.
They can change the way you see life.

This morning, Ruby looked at me for perhaps a minute.

Then she fell asleep.

Nothing dramatic happened.

But I felt something.

And maybe that's what I'm learning these days.

Life doesn't always become richer because something big happens.

Sometimes, it becomes richer because we become better at noticing the small things.

A dog's eyes.

A bird's cry.

A moment of connection.

A life that needs a little help.

And a quiet feeling inside me that says,

"I'm glad I was here."

I never planned this chapter of my life.

But I'm deeply grateful that it happened.

I didn't plan every part of the life I have now.
But somehow, I have grown to love the life I never planned.

And these days, when I write about these little moments, I get to live them one more time.

I remember.

I feel.

I smile.

And I understand my own life a little more clearly.

Maybe that's why I love writing so much these days.

I'm not just recording my life.
I'm discovering it while I write.

And sometimes, while writing about my life, I discover how much life has quietly given me. ❤️

KR Version

Ruby

Ruby

Rich
