Why I Keep Showing Up for This Small Golf Group -
These days, I find myself playing golf with this small group at least twice a month.
If we include our 9-hole games, I sometimes see them almost once a week.
I didn't plan it this way at first.
Actually, when I first joined the group, I thought they were a little too loud and playful for me.
I wondered,
“Hmm… I wonder if I really fit in with these people.” 😂
But the more I got to know them, the more I realized something.
They may joke around a lot, but they are all serious about golf.
Most of us are in our early 60s, give or take a few years. We are at similar stages of life, and we have a similar love of golf.
More importantly, they are good people.
They have good manners. They look out for each other. Sometimes, when we run into each other at the driving range, someone will even offer me a cup of coffee.
Those little things mean more to me than they might realize.
Our band leader is another reason I enjoy this group.
He is quick-witted, confident, and has a way of living life without overthinking everything. In many ways, his attitude toward life is similar to mine.
So when he asked me to become a co-leader, I thought about it and accepted.
But I told him,
“I'll quietly help. I don't need to be out front.”
That feels more like the person I am today.
A few days ago, we had a funny little episode while arranging our groups for our August 24 round.
Two female golfers were joining us for the first time, so we were figuring out the pairings.
I said in our group chat,
“I hope we get more women in the group. I want to play from the red tees, too.”
Then our PD immediately suggested a new pairing:
The band leader, me, and the two new female golfers.
Then our band leader quickly came back with another plan:
PD + one male player + the two new female golfers.
😂
PD had started the whole thing as a joke, but suddenly he became very serious.
He said something like,
“I'm finally starting to play a little better! And this is a really difficult course. Besides, I'm shy around women I've never met before…”
Nobody answered.
So I finally stepped in.
I said that since they were new to the group, it made sense for our band leader to play with them this time. And because the course was particularly difficult, PD could join them next time.
He immediately responded with a round of applause emoji. 👏
Problem solved.
I ended the conversation by saying,
“Watching everyone arrange the groups is more fun than the golf itself. Anyway, I'll wear pants and play from the white tees on the 24th.”
😂
I love these little moments.
You get to see everyone's personality.
You see the humor, the quick thinking, the little negotiations, and eventually, the consideration people have for one another.
And then there was another funny moment recently.
We played at Greenfield, and PD shot an 86 while I shot a 91.
A few days later, when we met again, I heard him proudly telling someone,
“I beat Angie for the first time!”
😂
I thought to myself,
“Oh, come on… I was playing from the white tees that day.”
But I didn't say it out loud.
I let him have his moment.
After all, he really did beat me that day.
Usually, even from the same white tees, I tend to score a little better than he does.
So I guess that 86 was a pretty special achievement for him.
“I finally scored better than Angie.”
He was still proud enough to tell other people about it a few days later.
And honestly, I found it funny rather than annoying.
That's one of the things I like about golf.
We're all getting older.
One day, our drives will get shorter, our swings will change, and our scores may not be what they used to be.
But we'll probably still say,
“I beat you today!”
or
“You beat me today!”
and laugh about it.
That little bit of competition makes golf even more fun.
And I've changed quite a bit in the way I deal with people, too.
A few years ago, I was pretty confident that I could help people directly, give them advice, and even help them change.
I don't think that way anymore.
Everyone is different.
Everyone has a different story, and there are so many circumstances that have shaped the person they are today—many of which I may never fully understand.
Golf taught me something about this, too.
If someone's swing isn't working, I don't walk up and try to give them a lesson unless they ask.
And even when someone asks me about their swing, I don't give them ten things to think about anymore.
I usually give them one simple suggestion.
Then I might say,
“But honestly, you're doing a lot of things really well.”
Maybe people need a little less advice and a little more confidence than we think.
I've learned that I don't need to get involved in everyone else's life.
I can simply live my own life well.
And strangely enough, since I've started doing that, life feels more peaceful—for me and, I think, for the people around me, too.
That's another reason this golf group has become important to me.
I have old friends from my hometown, and I treasure those friendships and all the memories we share.
But having known someone for a long time doesn't necessarily mean that our lives still fit together.
I've suggested playing golf with my hometown friends a few times, but somehow, we never seem to make it onto the same golf course. 😂
With this group, it's different.
We like golf.
We're around the same age.
We have similar energy.
And when we're together, there is always something to laugh about.
Most importantly, we don't have to try hard to become friends.
We simply keep meeting.
I've learned that finding a group of genuinely good people who naturally click with you isn't easy.
So when you find one, you appreciate it.
Of course, people may come and go over the years.
Some members may stop playing, and new members may join.
That's just life.
But I hope the good chemistry in this group lasts for a long time.
Maybe we'll still be playing golf together in our 70s.
And maybe, when we're around 80, we'll still be saying,
“Let's get together at least once this month.”
I would love that.
The more I think about life after 60, the more I realize that these things are some of life's greatest assets:
Good health.
Exercise.
Things I genuinely enjoy.
And people I genuinely want to spend time with.
With those four things, I think the next twenty years could be pretty fun.
Our golf will change.
The tees may change.
Our swings will change.
Our scores will change.
But I hope we keep playing together for many years.
The tees may change.
The swings may change.
The scores may change.
But I hope the laughter stays.
And someday, when we're 80, if someone beats me by one stroke and proudly announces it to everyone, I can already imagine myself smiling and saying,
“Okay, okay. You can have this one. 😂”
Because in the end, I don't think the score will be what we remember most.
As long as I have good friends beside me to laugh with, I want to keep playing this game for a long, long time. ⛳️❤️
KR Version
The tees may change.
The swings may change.
The scores may change.
But I hope the laughter stays.
