A Little Beer on an Ordinary Evening - 평범한 저녁, 맥주 한 잔
It rained a lot yesterday and today.
I had actually been waiting for the rain.
A while ago, I planted cabbage seeds in my little vegetable garden. Soon, tiny cabbages began growing everywhere, very close together.
They were still baby cabbages, not big mature heads.
I have been thinning them out little by little and eating the small ones as they grow.
The problem is that bugs love cabbage.
When the seedlings first appeared, I saw quite a few bugs, so I used a little insecticide.
But then, almost no rain came.
I kept watering the garden with tap water, but I still felt a little uneasy about eating the cabbages.
So I waited.
I wanted to wait for a good amount of rain before I started eating them.
Finally, yesterday and today, we had plenty of rain.
After the rain, I went out to my garden.
The wet black Jeju stones were shining, and the little green cabbages were everywhere.
Today, I picked a few of the baby cabbages.
I washed them well and made a simple Korean soybean paste soup with them.
Then I bought some frozen dumplings and pan-fried them at home until they were nice and crispy.
A warm bowl of soup.
Crispy dumplings.
And a little beer.
I don't really like drinking alcohol.
But once in a while, one glass of beer isn't bad.
It seems to slow me down a little and make an ordinary evening feel more relaxed.
Nothing special happened today.
I simply picked a few baby cabbages from my garden, made soup, cooked some dumplings, and had a little beer.
And somehow, I felt really good.
Maybe this is the kind of simple life I enjoy in Jeju.
No big plans.
No special occasion.
Just living an ordinary day well.

A little garden.

A few crispy dumplings.
And a little beer on an ordinary evening.

오늘은 오랜만에 비가 많이 내렸다.
나는 사실 이 비를 기다리고 있었다.
텃밭에 배추 씨를 뿌렸더니 아기 배추들이 아주 빽빽하게 올라왔다.
조금씩 솎아 먹으면서 키우고 있는데, 배추는 벌레들이 참 좋아한다.
싹이 올라왔을 때 벌레가 많이 보여서 초기에 해충제를 한 번 사용했다.
그런데 그 이후로 비가 거의 오지 않았다.
계속 물을 주기는 했지만, 마음 한구석이 조금 찜찜했다.
그래서 기다렸다.
비가 충분히 내리고 나면 그때부터 먹어야지.
그리고 드디어 어제와 오늘, 비가 정말 많이 왔다.
비가 내린 뒤 텃밭에 가보니 젖은 제주 돌들 사이로 초록색 아기 배추들이 가득하다.
오늘은 그중에서 몇 포기를 솎아왔다.
아직 커다란 배추 한 포기가 아니다.
씨를 뿌려 빽빽하게 자라고 있는 아기 배추들이다.
작은 배추들을 깨끗이 씻어 오늘 저녁에는 된장국을 끓였다.
그리고 군만두도 사다가 집에서 프라이팬에 노릇노릇 구웠다.
된장국 한 그릇, 바삭하게 구운 군만두,
그리고 오랜만에 맥주 한 잔.
나는 원래 술을 별로 좋아하지 않는다.
하지만 가끔 이렇게 마시는 맥주 한 잔은 나쁘지 않은 것 같다.
하루의 긴장을 조금 풀어주고, 평범한 저녁을 조금 더 느긋하게 만들어준다.
오늘 특별한 일이 있었던 것은 아니다.
그저 텃밭에서 아기 배추를 조금 솎아 먹었고,
된장국을 끓였고,
군만두를 구웠고,
맥주 한 잔을 마셨다.
그런데 이상하게 기분이 좋다.
아마 이런 게 내가 좋아하는 소박한 제주 생활인지도 모르겠다.
큰 계획도 없고, 특별한 사건도 없고,
그저 오늘 하루를 맛있게 살아내는 것.
오늘 특별한 일은 아무것도 없었다.
어쩌면 그래서 더 좋은 하루였는지도 모른다.
비가 조금 내리고,
텃밭에서 배추를 조금 솎고,
따뜻한 된장국을 먹고,
바삭한 군만두를 먹고,
평범한 저녁에 맥주 한 잔.
가끔은 평범한 하루만으로도 충분히 행복하다. 🌱🍲🥟🍺
