Golf at 60: Still Riding the Roller Coaster - 60
These days, my golf practice feels like riding a roller coaster.
Yesterday, my irons were hitting the ball so well.
I thought,
“Oh! Maybe I finally found my swing!”
I went home feeling great.
So today, I went back to the practice range thinking I would hit the ball even better.
But my very first shot was…
A fat shot.
Oh, no. 😂
I felt a little embarrassed.
Someone might be watching me, you know.
I tried again, and the ball flew beautifully.
“That's it!”
But today's practice was not that easy.
I practiced for 80 minutes, and for almost 40 of those minutes, I was quietly struggling with my swing.
Golf is such a strange game.
If just one little thing is wrong in your swing, you can lose a good impact.
But sometimes, when I don't think about anything and just swing, the ball comes off the club perfectly.
Click!
“Wait… what did I just do?”
I have no idea. 😂
Today, I went back to some basics with my 5-wood.
I tried to feel the weight of the clubhead during the backswing and completely relax my left arm.
I also worked on turning my whole shoulders instead of lifting my left shoulder.
On the downswing, I tried not to let my right hip turn too early. I wanted to keep my upper body behind the ball until impact.
With my irons, I practiced another feeling I had found: pressing my left palm slightly downward during the backswing.
After trying different things, I finally found my swing again during the last 20 minutes.
Driver, 5-wood, and irons.
Click. Click. Click.
Ah, that feeling!
I went home happy after all.
Then I thought about something.
I have been a practice-range member for more than seven years, and…
I'm still practicing. 😂
Maybe golf is not a game you ever completely finish learning.
It goes like this:
Good → bad → good again → bad again.
A roller coaster.
But I think there is one important difference.
Even though the ride goes up and down, the overall direction is still slowly going upward.
So maybe I don't need to worry too much when I have a bad practice day.
Life is a little like that, too.
Next week, my schedule is already getting busy.
On Monday, I have a police-station interpreting appointment.
On Tuesday, I have a dental appointment.
And on Thursday?
A golf round! Yay! 🏌️♀️
My students' midterm exams are also only two weeks away, so I have plenty of things to organize for them.
And suddenly I realize…
I'm 60, but I'm still as busy as a young person. 😂
But there is one big difference from the past.
I used to get busy and make my mind busy, too.
Now, I am busy with things I choose and things I enjoy.
I teach my students.
I interpret.
I practice golf.
I walk with my dogs.
I take care of my garden.
And when something interesting happens, I write about it on my blog.
Nothing very special.
But somehow, I enjoy it.
Maybe as we get older, what we are busy with matters more than how busy we are.
Golf is like that.
Life is like that.
We don't have to get better every single day.
Sometimes we go down.
Then we climb back up.
So I'm still practicing.
Golf.
And life.
And sometimes I ask myself,
“Am I really 60?”
Haha.
I still have so many things I am curious about.
There are still things I want to try.
And I am still curious about tomorrow.
Maybe that is what youth really means to me.
Age goes up.
Curiosity stays.
I'm 60.
Still riding the roller coaster.
And still slowly going upward. 😊
KR Version
Age goes up.
Curiosity stays.
Today is the perfect day when Hallasan is clearly visible from the driving range,
and the clouds in the sky float around like cotton candy.😊💖
