I Changed the Way I Spend Money — And I’m Much Happier
or a long time, I was the kind of person who chose the cheaper option whenever I bought something.
Even when I liked something more expensive, I often thought,
“Something a little cheaper will be fine.”
If two things looked similar and did almost the same job, why spend more?
I thought that was the smart and responsible way to live.
But lately, something has changed.
Last year, I replaced my golf clubs.
I chose the XXIO Royal Edition — driver, woods, utility clubs, and irons.
Since I love golf and actually use my clubs all the time, I decided to choose what I truly liked.
And this year, I bought something much smaller.
A Starbucks tumbler.
It cost 38,000 won (US$28)😁😃.
I actually thought about it for quite a while.
I could have bought a similar tumbler for less.
But this time, I asked myself three questions.
Do I really like it?
Will I use it for a long time?
Will it actually make my everyday life a little better?
The answer was yes to all three.
So I bought it.
And strangely enough, it made me very happy.
Just putting coffee into my new tumbler and taking it with me makes me smile.
Then I realized something.
I wasn't simply changing what I bought.
I was changing the way I thought about spending.
I don't want to buy more things just because I can.
And I don't want to buy expensive things just because they are expensive.
I simply don't want to automatically choose the cheaper option anymore when I truly like something and know I will use it.
I used to think that saving money was always the best way to take care of myself.
Now I see it a little differently.
Saving is important.
But using the money I have in a way that makes my everyday life better is also part of taking care of myself.
Especially now, I don't want to spend years saving something for “later.”
I want to enjoy the things I actually use today.
My golf clubs.
My little green tumbler.
My coffee.
None of these things are extraordinary.
But they make ordinary days a little more enjoyable.
So these days, I have a simple rule:
Save when it makes sense.
Spend when it truly adds something to your life.
And sometimes, tell yourself,
“It’s okay to choose something I really like.”
At 60, I think I'm finally learning this.
Happiness doesn't come from spending a lot of money.
And it doesn't necessarily grow just because we save every penny.
Maybe the real wisdom is learning the difference between
what we truly need and
what we truly love.
Today, I put my coffee into my new tumbler.
It's such a small thing.
But I like it.
And honestly,
that's enough. 😀💗
KR Version
