I Made a Birdie in a Pink Bunker -
Today was one of those golf days that made me very happy.
It had been about two or three weeks since my last round because of my long summer break. The weather was still warm, but I could feel a little autumn breeze. It felt like a perfect day for golf.
On the back nine, I came to a par 3 with a very unusual bunker.
The sand was pink.
I had never seen a pink-sand bunker before. It was so pretty against the green grass, blue sky, and pine trees.
And then something even better happened.
I made a birdie! 🏌️♀️
My caddie took a photo of me hitting a bunker shot from the pink sand. I think that photo will always remind me of this round.
But honestly, I was a little worried before the round.
Yesterday, I had practiced at the driving range, and my driver was not working well at all. I couldn't find my old impact feeling.
The other two players today are both longer hitters. One of my younger golf friends usually hits her driver about 20 meters farther than I do.
So yesterday, instead of leaving the range as usual, I asked the front desk if I could practice for another 20 minutes.
I have been a long-time member of this small rural practice facility, and because it is in the countryside, sometimes they are kind enough to give me a little extra time. I love this kind of relaxed country atmosphere. 😊
So I practiced hard for those extra 20 minutes.
My hands started to hurt, and my left leg almost cramped.
My younger friend, who was practicing nearby, looked worried and said,
“Unnie, what are you going to do? Your old impact isn't coming back!”
😂
But today, something changed.
My driver was much more stable. My old impact feeling was maybe 80% back, and I hit three or four really good drives.
I also received quite a few compliments from someone who hadn't played golf with me for a long time.
After the round, my younger friend laughed and said,
“Unnie, you looked so strange at the driving range yesterday, but whenever I see you on the course, you always play so well!”
She wasn't wrong. 😂
The funny thing is, I didn't even check my score during the round.
Later, the scores were sent to us.
I looked at mine and said,
“Oh? I shot 87?” 😂
The three scores were 87, 87, and 89.
But strangely enough, the number 87 wasn't the most memorable part of today.
What made me happier was that all three of us had such a good time together.
We joked around, complimented each other, and enjoyed the whole round.
There was another little surprise today, too.
My younger friend used to be a little sharp sometimes, and there had been moments when her words hurt my feelings. I had even thought that if things didn't change, maybe I wouldn't play with her anymore.
But today, she was different.
She was much softer and kinder, not only to me but also to the people around her.
At one point, I even told someone,
“Our younger friend has become so much gentler. Please give her some credit!” 😊
She had told me that she had sincerely thought about her past behavior and reflected on it a lot.
And honestly, I could feel that the change was real.
I was happy to see it.
Because when one person becomes a little gentler, the people around that person can become happier, too.
And maybe the person who becomes gentler becomes happier as well.
That made today's golf round feel even more special.
Golf is such an honest sport.
If I don't practice, my shots usually tell me the truth.
If I practice hard, sometimes the ball gives me a beautiful answer.
But for me, the best feeling isn't always the score.
It is that clean moment when the club meets the ball just right.
And today, I got that feeling back.
A pink bunker.
A birdie.
An 87.
And three people who simply enjoyed being together.
Maybe that was today's best score. 💕
Maybe Good Things Are Contagious
I sometimes felt that my younger friend was watching the way I talked and acted, and perhaps trying to learn from me.
I don’t know what was really in her heart, and I don’t want to assume. But I did feel that she was paying attention to the way I stayed positive, encouraged others, and celebrated their good shots.
Maybe that’s why I found myself saying “Nice shot!” and “That was amazing!” to her even more often today.
I wasn’t trying to teach her anything. I was just being myself.
There was another small moment that made me smile.
When someone says something to me, I often say, “Yes, that could be true,” even when I have a different opinion. I don’t think I always have to prove that I’m right.
But my younger friend still likes to prove that what she says is right. 😂
So I quietly said to her,
“Hey, what’s so hard about just saying, ‘Yes, that could be right’? You don’t always have to prove that you’re right. Just leave a little room for the other person.”
I said it with a smile.
She immediately smiled back and said,
“You’re really smart, Unnie. 😂”
That little moment made me happy.
Maybe being wise is not always about knowing more.
Sometimes, it is simply knowing when to say, “Yes, that could be true.” 😊
And maybe good things really can be passed from one person to another without us even realizing it.
Sometimes, we learn from each other without saying a word. 🌿
KR Version
