I Traveled the World, Only to Realize How Beautiful Home Was.- 세상을 여행하고 나서야 알게 된, 내 고향의 아름다움 🌏🏡⛳
Venice, Vienna, Paris, London…
I traveled to Hong Kong many times, visited Singapore, and went to Hawaii more than once.
I lived in San Francisco and played a lot of golf there. I have seen many beautiful places around the world.
And of course, there were places like Niagara Falls that were simply breathtaking in scale.
But something interesting happened as I traveled more.
The more of the world I saw, the more beautiful my hometown, Seogwipo, became to me.
Not just because of the scenery.
Because it is home.
My neighborhood friends are here.
My old school friends are here.
My family and relatives are here.
If I have a problem, I can call someone.
There is always someone who will help me.
When I was younger, I sometimes thought having too many people who knew me was uncomfortable.
I wanted my privacy.
I wanted to be independent.
But now, I see it differently.
Having people who know me makes me feel safe.
Sometimes a relative or one of my siblings will call and say,
“Come and get some of these.”
Maybe it is tangerines from their farm.
Maybe it is fresh vegetables from their garden.
And I will happily go and pick them up.
We look at each other, smile, talk for a while, and I come home with a bag full of food.
Nothing special.
But somehow, it feels special.
Because there is a feeling of belonging.
I didn't fully understand how valuable that feeling was when I was younger.
Living abroad, especially in the United States, was exciting and wonderful.
But when you live far away from your family and familiar people, there is always a little tension in the background.
I remember checking my hand whenever I left my apartment:
“Do I have my keys?”
With my old car, the doors would automatically lock a little while after I closed them.
So every time I closed the car door, I would instinctively check my hand:
“Do I have my car keys?” 😄
Because if you have family nearby, you can always call someone and say,
“Can you bring me the spare key?”
But when you are living alone in another country, you don't have that option.
I actually experienced this once.
I was living in an apartment complex in the United States, where the laundry room was shared by the residents.
One day, I stepped outside to do my laundry.
I closed the apartment door—
and suddenly realized:
I didn't have my keys.
I was completely panicked.
What was I going to do?
Fortunately, a neighbor from the apartment next door happened to be there.
I explained what had happened and asked for their help.
With their permission, I managed to get back into my apartment by going over through the balcony.
I still remember how relieved I was.
And honestly, just thinking about it now makes me nervous. 😂
In the United States, people generally respect each other's privacy and personal space, so you don't just walk into someone else's home or ask a stranger for that kind of help.
I was lucky that day.
But that little experience taught me something.
When you live alone in a foreign country, even small things can make you feel vulnerable.
You have to think about everything yourself.
Your keys.
Your car.
Your apartment.
What happens if something goes wrong?
None of these things are particularly serious.
But when there is no family nearby and no familiar person you can immediately call, they can create a quiet sense of anxiety.
Now, living in my hometown, I feel something I didn't appreciate enough when I was younger.
Peace of mind.
I can call someone.
Someone can call me.
People know where I am.
I know where they are.
There is a quiet sense that
I am not alone.
And then there is one more thing that makes home even better.
I can play the game I love right here in Jeju. ⛳
I played plenty of golf while living in San Francisco, but now I can enjoy the same game in my hometown, with the ocean, mountains, and beautiful Jeju landscape around me.
I can play golf.
I can practice English.
I can take care of my garden.
I can write about the things I discover.
And I can simply enjoy an ordinary day.
After seeing so much of the world, I no longer feel that I need to go somewhere far away to find something extraordinary.
Maybe that is one of the greatest gifts of traveling.
You leave home to see the world, and sometimes you come back and finally see home.
I traveled the world, only to realize how beautiful home was.
The farther I traveled,
the more I appreciated home.
Maybe home was never ordinary.
Maybe I just needed to see the world first.
And now I understand something else:
Home is not only a beautiful place.
Home is where your heart can finally relax. 🏡
And today, I can play the golf I love in the place where I was born, surrounded by people who know me.
What more could I ask for? 😊⛳
KR Version
I traveled the world, only to realize how beautiful home was.
⛳ Phantom CC, Jeju - Photo
And that view of Hallasan?
That's my kind of luxury. 😊🏔️⛳
📝 Angie’s English Note
panic → panicked / panicking
So:
panic → panicked → panicking
picnic → picnicked → picnicking
mimic → mimicked → mimicking
Now you know!
"Welcome! Here, you'll find easy golf English and real conversations. Enjoy your journey, one story at a time."
