I Wasn't Born for Numbers or Golf -
People often assume that if someone becomes good at something, they must have had natural talent.
That wasn't my story.
Frankly speaking, I was never good with numbers.
Even today, I sometimes can't remember my own car's license plate after driving the same car for a year. It still makes me laugh.
Yet I earned two MBAs and eventually became a Treasury Manager at a global company.
When I was offered that position, I was honestly nervous.
One of my friends smiled and said,
"If you know how to add and subtract, you'll be just fine."
At the time, I wasn't sure whether to believe those words.
Now I know my friend wasn't talking about mathematics.
He was talking about courage.
Around the same time, another challenge appeared in my life.
Our company decided to launch its golf business, and every manager was expected to learn golf.
There was only one problem.
I had neither the time nor the money.
In Korea, golf was an expensive sport, especially for someone in their late thirties.
I was already busy as a Treasury Manager.
Many days, I skipped a proper lunch and grabbed a piece of bread so I could spend my break practicing golf.
Most of the golf I played came through company events or business invitations.
I couldn't afford to play as much as I wanted on my own.
But little by little, golf became more than part of my job.
I wanted to play better.
That desire eventually led me to San Francisco to earn another MBA.
I wanted to improve my English.
I wanted to play more golf.
Looking back, I realize that golf changed far more than my swing.
It changed the direction of my life.
Today, golf is still teaching me.
Not just how to hit a golf ball, but how to accept challenges, improve little by little, and trust the process.
Nobody is perfect.
We all have strengths and weaknesses.
The important thing is not to become perfect.
It is to understand yourself well, reduce your weaknesses, and continue building on your strengths.
Looking back, I wasn't born for numbers.
I wasn't born for golf, either.
But both became part of the life I'm deeply grateful for today.
KR Version
