One Swimming Pool, Three Doctors? Haha -

Sometimes, I don't feel like going to the swimming pool.

I have to pack my swimsuit, get in the car, and drive there.

Honestly, sometimes I think,

“Oh… should I go today? I’m too lazy.” 😂

Then I change my mind.

“Wait a minute. One swimming pool can give me the benefits of three different kinds of care!”

Here is how I think about it.

1. Dermatology — A Natural Face and Full-Body Lift? Haha

As we get older, not only our faces but also our bodies can lose some firmness.

Of course, everyone is different. Some of it may simply come from our genes, too. 😊

But I have been swimming regularly for many years, and I feel that moving my whole body in the water has helped me keep my body firm.

I actually remember something that happened when I was in my 40s.

One day, a woman asked me,

“Your body looks very firm. What is your secret?”

I answered immediately.

“I swim regularly.”

Of course, maybe I was naturally lucky, too. Haha.

But as we get older, I think we can really see differences between people of the same age.

So, to me, swimming feels like my own natural full-body lifting exercise.

And being in the water feels wonderful for my skin, too.

The water gently surrounds my whole body, and I love that soft feeling.

Of course, I am not saying that swimming can replace a real dermatology treatment.

I just think of it as my own little “free full-body beauty treatment.” 😂

But when it comes to my face, I have learned an expensive lesson.

When I was younger, I loved golf and didn't worry much about the sun.

I would put on some sunscreen, leave my face uncovered, and happily go play golf.

Then, one day, I suddenly noticed dark spots on my face.

I ended up spending almost two years going to a dermatologist to treat them.

So now, when I go golfing, I always bring a mask and an umbrella.

When I was young, I wasn't afraid of the sun at all. Now, the sun is my biggest enemy. 😂

2. Orthopedics — A Massage for My Muscles

I love practicing my golf swing.

But after a good practice session, the muscles in my body can become tight.

I should stretch properly afterward, but sometimes…

I am lazy about that, too. 😂

When I get into the swimming pool, however, the water gently supports my body.

My muscles begin to relax.

To me, it feels almost like getting a full-body massage in the water.

That is one reason I keep going back.

3. Psychiatry — When My Body Relaxes, My Mind Relaxes

Okay, this is my own funny name for it. 😂

When I get into the water, my body becomes relaxed.

And when my body relaxes, my mind seems to relax, too.

For a while, I can put my busy thoughts aside.

After swimming, I often feel lighter—not only in my body, but also in my mind.

Swimming was also a great help to me during a difficult period after menopause.

It gave me time to relax, breathe, and simply feel good.

Of course, I am not saying that swimming replaces professional mental-health treatment.

I am simply talking about what swimming has personally done for me.

So I try to go swimming at least two or three times a week.

Even in the cold winter.

Sometimes, before leaving home, I think,

“Should I really go? It's so annoying to get ready…”

Then I remind myself:

“Come on, Angie. You're getting skin care, a muscle massage, and a mental break—all in one place!” 😂

That little thought gets me moving.

Soon, I am behind the wheel, driving toward the swimming pool.

For me, swimming is a very cost-effective hobby.

Face and body care + muscle relaxation + mental relaxation.

Three in one!

And there is another reason I love swimming so much.

I have loved water since I was a little girl.

When my family went to the beach in Jeju when I was young, I loved going into the water.

I would put on my goggles and explore the sea.

There were so many colorful fish in the waters around Jeju.

Once I got into the water, I didn't want to come out.

If I went into the sea in the morning, my family sometimes had to come looking for me when it was time for lunch! 😂

I also remember another place from my childhood.

Our home once had a big fruit orchard, and there was a huge concrete water tank there.

Every summer, we filled it with water.

Then my family and I would play and swim in it until late at night.

I was a little troublemaker back then, and that water tank was the perfect place for me to show my playful side. 😂

Looking back, I guess I have loved water my whole life.

Even now, when I am in the pool, I sometimes imagine that I am a mermaid. 🧜‍♀️

I love the feeling of water gently surrounding my body.

It makes me feel soft, free, and relaxed.

So swimming is not just exercise for me.

It helps my body rest.

It helps my mind rest.

And somehow, it even brings the little girl I used to be back to me.

So whenever I am sitting at home thinking,

“Should I go swimming today?”

I tell myself,

“Come on, Angie. Think of it as visiting three doctors at once!” 😂

And somehow, my car starts moving toward the swimming pool.

I guess there is no doubt about it.

Swimming is one of the best health hobbies in my life.

One More Thing I Always Think About

There is one more thing I often think about when I go swimming.

I wish everyone, especially young people, would learn how to swim.

Not because everyone has to become a great swimmer.

Not because swimming has to be your favorite sport.

Just learn how to move comfortably in the water.

I am 60 now, and when I look back at my life, I realize how valuable swimming has been to me.

It has given me exercise.

It has helped me relax my body after golf.

It has given my mind a quiet place to rest.

And most of all, it has given me something I can continue to enjoy as I get older.

When you are young, you may not think much about this.

You may think,

“I have plenty of time.”

I used to be young, too. 😂

But one day, you become 40.

Then 50.

And suddenly, you are 60.

And you may realize that the things you learned and enjoyed when you were young can become wonderful gifts to your older self.

That is why, whenever I drive to the swimming pool, I sometimes think,

“I am so glad I learned how to swim.”

And if I could give one small piece of advice to younger people, it would be this:

Learn how to swim while you are young.

You don't have to swim fast.

You don't have to swim perfectly.

Just become comfortable in the water.

Because you never know how much joy that simple skill may bring you many years later.

At 60, I still put on my swimsuit, jump into the water, and imagine that I am a little mermaid. 🧜‍♀️😂

And honestly?

I hope I am still doing it at 80.

KR Version
