Still Learning My Body with Golf -
About a year ago, I learned a new name for something happening inside my body:
Rheumatoid arthritis.
Honestly, I was scared.
My finger joints had been swollen for quite a while, and eventually the pain became so severe that I could barely hold a golf club, let alone swing it.
But the biggest problem for me was something else.
“Does this mean I can never play golf again?”
That thought made me surprisingly depressed.
I thought I could handle almost anything else.
But no golf?
That was serious. 😂
If I could never play golf again, what was I supposed to do with the rest of my life?
Would my golf clubs become decorations?
Would the driving range become a place from my past?
Would I have to go to the golf course just to watch other people play?
I imagined everything.
Looking back, it makes me laugh.
But at the time, I was genuinely devastated.
“This is the end of my golf career.”
For a while, I was practically holding a funeral for my golf career. 😂
At first, I thought the finger problem was temporary.
So I took anti-inflammatory and pain medication prescribed by an internist for about six months, thinking the pain would eventually go away.
Then, fortunately, I discovered that it was rheumatoid arthritis and started proper treatment.
The words “autoimmune disease” sounded frightening.
So did the idea that I might have to manage it for the rest of my life.
Naturally, I became extremely careful with my fingers.
“I shouldn't put any stress on them.”
I tried not to use them too much.
I worried whenever something felt slightly unusual.
And, of course, I thought I had to be extremely careful with golf.
But as time passed, I learned something important about my own body.
Being overly careful didn't necessarily make things better.
That was when I started thinking:
“Maybe protecting my body doesn't mean being afraid to use it.”
Maybe it means learning how to use it properly.
Of course, I take my medication as prescribed.
I also have blood tests every six months.
My inflammation markers were normal at my last checkup three months ago.
So these days, I no longer treat my fingers as if they were precious museum artifacts. 😂
I'm back to golf.
I'm back at the driving range.
But I don't try to hit hundreds of balls anymore.
I usually hit about 50–70 balls with a full swing.
And then?
Free swings.
At first, I did a lot of free swings because I was worried about putting too much stress on my fingers.
But this turned into a surprisingly wonderful discovery.
I realized I didn't have to hit a ball hard to practice my swing.
I could simply move my body, feel the swing, and focus on the movement itself.
And then something funny happened.
What I thought was a limitation became my medicine.
Today, I went to the driving range and picked up my 7-iron.
And honestly?
It felt like I was swinging like I was in my twenties. 😂🏌️♀️
No fat shots.
No thin shots.
Just clean contact and solid impact.
I actually thought,
“Wait… what's going on here?”
I had been doing more free swings to protect my fingers.
And somehow, that little adjustment had helped make my swing freer and more consistent.
My body seems to be teaching me something very similar to what golf has taught me.
You don't always need to use more force.
You don't always need to avoid movement.
You need to understand what your body is telling you and learn how to work with it.
I also pay a little more attention to what I eat.
Tomatoes, onions, garlic, and a variety of nutritious foods have become more intentional parts of my meals.
Not because I suddenly became a doctor. 😂
Medication is medication.
Food is food.
Exercise is exercise.
And life is still life.
I play golf.
I go to the driving range.
I swim.
I work in my garden.
And sometimes I think about how funny life is.
A year ago, my finger pain was so severe that I thought I had just attended the funeral of my golf career.
Today, I'm standing at the driving range wondering:
50 balls? 60? 70?
😂
Apparently, my biggest problem now is deciding how many golf balls I should hit.
And sometimes I think:
“Well, at least it's not cancer.”
Of course, rheumatoid arthritis and cancer are completely different diseases, and I'm not trying to compare them medically.
I simply feel grateful for the life I have today.
Maybe my body was giving me an early signal that I needed to pay more attention to it.
A frightening diagnosis became an opportunity to learn how my body works.
I used to ask:
“What's wrong with me?”
Now I ask:
“What is my body trying to tell me?”
That feels like a much better question.
I still don't know everything about my body.
So I'm still learning.
I'm still learning my golf swing.
I'm still learning my body.
And, apparently, I'm still learning life.
At my age, I may be a late student.
But strangely enough…
I really enjoy this class. 😂
A year ago, I thought rheumatoid arthritis might take golf away from me forever.
Today, I'm back at the driving range, hitting my 7-iron like I'm in my twenties.
And the funny thing is that the free swings I started because I was afraid of hurting my fingers turned out to be medicine rather than poison.
Compared with what many other people my age are facing, I sometimes think:
“My current problem? Just a piece of gum.” 😂
Yes, a year ago I was practically holding a funeral for my golf career.
Now I'm calling the whole thing a piece of gum.
Life is funny.
Sometimes the thing that scares us the most becomes one of the most valuable lessons we ever receive.
So here I am.
Still learning.
Still swinging.
Still living.
Still learning my body.
Today's Verdict!!
Born positive.
Still learning.
Still swinging. 🏌️♀️😂
And today?
My 7-iron felt twenty again.
A happy day. 🌿
And One More Funny Thing Happened Today 😂
There was another funny little episode at the driving range today.
I was hitting my 7-iron in the middle of the range, and suddenly an older gentleman I didn't know offered to buy me a drink.
I have a feeling he had been watching my swing from behind.
After all, my 7-iron was flying like I was in my twenties today. 😂🏌️♀️
So I politely said,
“But I don't know you. I feel a little awkward accepting a drink from you…”
Then he said,
“We're from the same neighborhood. I know your parents very well.”
Ah!
Only in a small community. 😂
So it felt a little awkward to refuse, and I asked him his name.
Then I said,
“Oh… I think I've heard that name before.”
And honestly, I probably had. 😂
Then, out of nowhere, he asked me,
“Which graduation class were you in at elementary school?”
And suddenly my brain stopped working.
“Wait… what year was my graduation class?” 😂
To be honest, I had completely forgotten.
So I gave him my best guess.
Then he confidently told me,
“I was in the Class of ’23.”
😂😂😂
So today I went to the driving range to practice my golf…
and somehow ended up talking about my parents, our neighborhood, and elementary school graduation classes.
I guess I practiced my golf swing and discovered a little piece of my old neighborhood at the same time.
And if he really offered me a drink because he had been impressed by my swing from behind…
then apparently today's 7-iron did more than just move the golf ball.
It may have moved a person's heart, too. 😂🏌️♀️
Not bad for a day at the driving range.
But then I thought about it.
Maybe it wasn't so strange that he recognized me.
I look so much like my mother—not just my face, but even my build. 😂
And we are a big family: my parents and six children.
So even people I've never met before sometimes recognize me immediately.
Apparently, in my hometown, I don't always have to introduce myself.
My family has already introduced me. 😂
KR Version
Today's Verdict!!
Born positive.
Still learning.
Still swinging.
