The Peace I Have Today Was Earned Through Life's Lessons -

When I was young, I worked hard.

I built my career, earned my own money, and spent generously on the people around me—especially my family.

At the time, it felt natural.

If I could give, I gave.
If someone I loved needed something, I helped.

But life taught me something I could never have learned from a book.

Giving to others does not mean they will be there for you in the same way when you need them.

People have their own lives, their own circumstances, and their own choices.

My parents helped me when I truly needed it. I am grateful for that.

But ultimately, I learned that I was responsible for my own life.

It took me many years to truly accept that.

And now, I know something else.

I like living alone.

I enjoy my coffee by myself in the morning.
I go play golf.
I laugh with my friends.
And when I come home, I watch whatever I want on TV.

Ruby and Rich are waiting for me.

I sleep when I want to sleep.
I rest when I want to rest.
I don't have to explain my choices to anyone.

When I was younger, I might have thought this kind of life sounded lonely.

But now I know better.

This is not loneliness.
This is peace.

And this peace did not come for free.

It was earned through many choices, sacrifices, disappointments, and moments when I had to stand on my own.

Those experiences were expensive lessons.

But they taught me something valuable.

I don't dislike people.

Actually, I enjoy people more now.

I can play golf with different people, laugh together, enjoy a good conversation, and then simply go home to my own life.

If someone gives me a small kindness, I can simply say,

“Thank you. I'll enjoy it.”

I don't have to immediately think about what I should give back.

And when I want to give something, I give because I want to—not because I owe anyone.

Maybe this is another lesson I am learning at this stage of my life:

How to give without keeping score, and how to receive without feeling indebted.

I also think about something else these days.

I have to exist for my world to exist for me.

Without me, there would be no morning coffee, no Jeju breeze, no golf with friends, no laughter, and no Ruby and Rich waiting for me at home.

So perhaps the most important thing I can do with the rest of my life is simply this:

Live my own life well.

For a long time, I thought happiness meant having more.

Now I think happiness can also mean having fewer things to carry.

Fewer obligations.
Fewer expectations.
Fewer explanations.

And being able to sit quietly and think,

“Ah… my life is peaceful.”

The peace I enjoy today did not come without a price.

It was built from many sacrifices and shaped by many lessons.

And perhaps that is why it feels so precious.

I didn't simply find peace.
I earned it.

And now, I am happy to live in it.

Of course, what I gave did not always come back to me in the same way.

The money I spent on my family did not come back as money.
The kindness I gave was not always returned in the same form.

But now I realize that it doesn't mean nothing came back.

Sometimes, things return in a completely different form.

They return as friendships.
As small acts of kindness when I need them.
As people who remember me fondly.

And perhaps, in one simple way, they have already returned to me:

I don't have enemies. 😊

I may not have received everything back in the way I once imagined.

But I have built a life where I can meet people without resentment, enjoy good relationships without keeping score, and go home peacefully to my own life.

Maybe that is also a kind of return.

Life doesn't always give back in the same form.
Sometimes, it comes back as peace.

And perhaps that is one of the most valuable things life has given me.

KR Version

Life doesn't always give back in the same form.
Sometimes, it comes back as peace.

Photo: The weather was so clear today that looking south from the second floor of the practice range, I could see a beautiful tangerine orchard with the blue sea and a small island stretching out at the horizon.😄💖
