Today’s Wisdom Muscle — Angie’s Heart Changed 180 Degrees (오늘의 지혜의 근육 — 180도 바뀐 엔지 마음)
This morning, as soon as I woke up, I said something to myself.
“If I can’t avoid it, let’s enjoy it!!!!!!!!!!!!”
These days, Ruby and Rich often wake me up one after another during the night.
So I sometimes don’t get enough deep sleep, and I feel a little tired when I wake up.
But what can I do?
This is my life.
So I decided to enjoy the day anyway.
Today Was My Day to Work in My Field
Today, I had decided to go to my field in Yong-su-ri.
I packed my weed sprayer and headed out.
But when I arrived, I was surprised.
There were not many weeds.
It had not rained for quite a while, and we had only had some rain during the last two days. The summer heat had also gone down a little.
There were some weeds in one area, but instead of spraying weed killer, I decided to pull them out myself.
Honestly, I don't feel completely comfortable using too much weed killer on my own land.
So I spent about one hour pulling weeds by hand.
And that wasn't all.
I also cleaned up the trees around the field, removed vines, and cut some wild branches that had kept growing all summer.
That took more than another hour.
So I worked hard in the field for more than two hours.
Then I got back in my car and drove home.
Including the driving back and forth, I had been moving and working for almost four hours that morning.
But strangely, I felt good.
The weather was beautiful, and my body felt good, too.
I was tired and sweaty, but I was happy.
“I'm glad I came today.”
I finished my work with a good feeling and came home.
But…
I wasn't finished yet. 😂💦
Ruby Created Another Job for Me
There is one long-time troublemaker in my house.
It is the big screen door between my living room and my yard.
Whenever Ruby gets excited because she sees or hears a cat or another animal outside, she sometimes bites through the screen and runs out.
I have repaired it many times.
And every time, I told Ruby,
“Ruby, don't do that!”
But early this morning, Ruby suddenly started barking.
I think she heard a cat outside.
Then, in a second,
RIP!
I heard the familiar sound of her tearing through the screen.
I ran after her, but it was already too late.
There was probably a cat in the yard.
Ruby followed her instinct and ran outside, while Rich simply waited in front of the screen door for me to open it.
Rich is such a good boy.
But dogs are dogs.
Sometimes they follow their instincts, and I have to deal with the results.
So I said,
“Oh, my life…” 😂💦
So I Bought a New Screen
On my way home from the field, I bought a new screen.
I thought if I sat down and rested first, I would have to change my clothes again before working.
So I started right away.
I had done this several times before, so I thought I was becoming quite an expert at installing screens.
Quickly and confidently,
I measured it.
I cut it.
And then…
Oops.
I cut the screen before I should have.
That was the problem.
I tried to finish the edges with the rubber strip, but it didn't work as easily as I expected.
Still, I had already started.
I wasn't going to give up.
So I spent almost another hour in the yard, sweating and fighting with the screen.
Finally, it was done!
And when I looked at the finished screen…
I loved it.
It was clean and new, and I could see the yard so clearly from the living room.
And suddenly, my feelings changed 180 degrees.
Just a little earlier, I had been saying,
“Ruby! Why did you tear it again?”
But now I looked at the new screen and started laughing.
“Ruby, thank you.”
Because you tore the old one, your lazy mom finally replaced it.
Now I can see the yard so clearly. 😀💖
So I Took This Photo
At first, I wasn't going to take this photo.
I thought maybe I should take a prettier and cleaner picture.
But then I thought,
“Wait. This is my real life.”
If you look carefully at the photo, you can even see my weed sprayer still lying in the yard because I haven't put it away yet. 😀💖
I had worked in the field for more than two hours, driven back and forth, and started fixing the screen as soon as I got home.
So, of course, the weed sprayer was still there.
I want to record these things, too.
Not only the pretty and tidy moments,
but how I actually lived that day.
Working in the field, sweating in the yard, fixing a screen, and leaving my weed sprayer right there.
I think these ordinary moments may become even more precious and interesting memories someday.
And suddenly, I thought,
Maybe I still have some of my 20-year-old energy. 😀💖
I worked in the field for more than two hours,
drove back and forth,
and started another job as soon as I got home.
But I am not the same person I was in my 20s.
I now have the energy of my 20s, plus the wisdom muscle I have built in my 60s.
I think that is a pretty good combination.
To be honest, I almost gave up.
At one point, I thought,
“Maybe I should just throw this away and buy another one.”
The edges had started to tear a little, and the work was much harder than I expected.
The last screen I installed was made of a fabric-like material, so it was very easy to work with. But this one was made with very thin metal wires, and it was much more difficult to handle.
I think I was a little too confident because I had done it successfully before.
“I can do this. I’m practically an expert now.”
Well… that was my little mistake. 😀💖
I even cut the screen before I finished the whole job.
As I struggled with it, I thought,
“Maybe I should have just paid someone to do this.”
“What am I doing right now?”
I had a lot of thoughts going through my mind.
But I kept going.
I felt frustrated.
I blamed myself a little.
I almost gave up.
And then I tried again.
In the end, I succeeded.
It was a small victory, but it felt really good.
And that's when my feelings toward Ruby changed completely.
“Ruby, thank you.”
If you hadn't torn the old screen, I probably wouldn't have replaced it yet. 😀💖
Next time, I will remember one important thing:
Never cut the screen first. Finish everything, and cut it at the very end.
Lesson learned. 😀💖
Maybe this was another little workout for my wisdom muscle. 💪
But the Real Lottery Ticket Came Later
After I finished the screen, I was writing this post when one of my students called me.
This is a student I have been working very hard with for a long time.
His English score used to be around 50 out of 100.
He has been improving little by little, and now he is getting scores in the 80s.
But since yesterday, he kept telling me,
“Teacher, I think I’m going to get 100 this time.”
Inside, I was thinking,
Okay. If you get over 90 this time, I'll be really happy.
Then he called me today.
I thought,
Oh, maybe he got over 90.
But…
He really got 100.
😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁💓💓💓
Wow…
I won the lottery today!
This is actually one of the students who has been the hardest for me because he also has difficulty understanding Korean reading passages.
So this 100 felt even more special.
What a day.
Could it be another little bit of luck from the white baby bulbul I saved before? 😀
Of course, it was probably just a coincidence.
But I like enjoying little coincidences like this.
They make life a little more fun.
Today’s Wisdom Muscle
When I look back at today, it was quite an interesting day.
I didn't sleep well.
I felt a little tired in the morning.
I worked in my field for more than two hours.
I drove back and forth.
Then I came home and spent almost another hour fixing the screen.
At first, some of these things felt annoying and tiring.
But in the end,
I was able to say,
“Ruby, thank you.”
And the student who had given me so many headaches finally got 100 in English.
Life is funny.
I don't think everything has to feel good from the beginning.
Sometimes something can be annoying or difficult in the moment.
But our feelings can change later.
So I want to say again what I told myself this morning:
“If I can’t avoid it, let’s enjoy it!!!!!!!!!!!!”
And one last thing for today:
What can I do? This is my life.
Ruby and Rich waking me up at night,
the weeds and vines in my field,
the torn screen,
the weed sprayer still lying in my yard,
and the unexpected 100 from my student…
This is all part of my life today.
Live simply.
Enjoy it for real.
And quietly record it.
I had another wonderfully ordinary day.
As always, I’m Angie. 😀💖
KR Version
