Why Do We Live Such Different Lives? -

Yesterday, I met two police officers I had gotten to know through an English interpretation job.

Both were a little younger than me, and they looked very healthy and strong because they exercise regularly.

To be honest, I went there hoping to get some good energy from them.

But after talking with them, I felt like they had taken some of my energy instead. Haha.

Both of them said that life had been very hard.

Being a police officer, they told me, means dealing with much more than most people probably imagine.

Of course, there are serious crimes and accidents.

But there are also many smaller situations.

Couples have arguments and call the police.
People have emotional fights with each other.
There are small traffic accidents where no one is seriously hurt.

In Korea, if you call 112, the police come.
If you call 119, someone comes to help.

We are so used to this that we sometimes forget something very simple.

The person who comes to help is also a person.

After spending the whole day dealing with other people's problems, that person goes home to a family and a life of their own.

Korea also has many CCTV cameras.

When something happens, someone has to check the cameras, look at different times and places, listen to people's stories, and try to understand what really happened.

Behind the safe and convenient life we enjoy, there are many people quietly spending their time and energy to make it possible.

As we talked, the conversation naturally moved to family.

One of them had recently lost both of his beloved parents, one after another. He was also going through a divorce and was supporting his child through college.

The other was supporting three children through college on one income. His oldest child had already graduated, but was still looking for a good job and kept getting rejected.

Both of them said that life had become so difficult that they sometimes felt they could not go on.

Listening to them, I had many thoughts.

Of course, losing your parents is a deep pain that I cannot fully understand.

Family problems and raising children are not easy, either.

But one thought kept coming to me.

Why do we sometimes try to carry more than we can actually carry?

We love our children, so we want to give them more.

We are parents, so we feel responsible for them.

We want our children to go to a good university and find a good job.

If we can help, we want to do everything we can.

It probably all starts with love.

But what happens when the thoughts become:

“I have to do this for them.”

“I have to solve this somehow.”

“I am their parent, so I have to take care of it.”

What if those thoughts keep pulling us further and further into a life that is too heavy for us?

I sometimes think that even love and responsibility need a boundary.

Of course, parents can help their children.

I am a parent too, and I know the joy of helping someone I love.

But helping someone and living their life for them are two different things.

This reminded me of my father.

Right after I graduated from college, I was working for an American company and wanted to study in the United States.

I told my father that I wanted to go.

He said,

“There are six children in our family. If all of you ask me to send you abroad, I cannot afford to send everyone. I can support you if you go to graduate school, but I cannot afford to support you through a graduate program in the United States.”

I was in my twenties then.

Of course, I was a little disappointed as his daughter.

But I quickly understood his position, and I accepted it.

Now, at sixty, I think my father's clear and realistic thinking was actually one of the things that kept our family strong.

He did not say no because he did not love me.

He knew what he could afford and what he could not.

And he was willing to draw that line.

At the time, I simply thought, “My father cannot pay for my American education.”

Now I see something much more important in his decision.

Loving your children does not mean you can or should give them everything.

And I began to wonder if constantly trying to carry what we cannot carry might also be a kind of desire.

When I say “desire,” I do not mean only wanting more money or more success.

Sometimes it can be the desire to be the person who must do everything.

“I have to give them everything I can.”

“I have to solve this somehow.”

“I have to take care of this too.”

These thoughts may begin with love.

But at some point, they can become a heavy responsibility that slowly wears us down.

Thinking about all this made me realize something else.

My own life is actually very simple.

I play golf.

I come home to Ruby and Rich.

I look around my little garden.

I go swimming.

I eat something delicious.

And I wonder what tomorrow might bring.

I do not have to solve everyone's problems.

I do not have to carry everything.

And I am very comfortable with this life.

Yesterday, I smiled and told the two of them,

“I came here hoping to get some energy from you, but you are taking my energy instead!” Haha.

We all laughed.

But after I came home, I kept thinking about our conversation.

And I decided that I probably will not join this kind of gathering very often anymore. Haha.

It is not because I dislike anyone.

It is simply because listening to such heavy stories does not give me the power to solve anything.

And honestly, after listening for a long time, my head hurts.

I want to live the life that I can actually live.

Rather than trying to live other people's lives for them,
I want to live my own life well.

People want different things.

People choose different levels of responsibility.

And people find happiness in different ways.

So I started wondering:

Why do we live such different lives?

Maybe it is because we all value different things.

Some people choose to carry a lot for their families.

Others choose to protect their own time and their own peace.

I do not think there is one correct answer.

But for my own life, I want to learn to do three things:

Love as much as I can handle.

Take responsibility for what I can handle.

And let go of what is beyond my limit.

Because I have to be here to love the people I love.

I have to be here to see Ruby and Rich.

I have to be here to play golf.

I have to be here to notice the small changes in my garden.

So perhaps taking care of myself is also an important responsibility.

At sixty, I think I finally understand this a little better.

Living my life peacefully is not a small goal.

It is actually a pretty good one.

So today, I will play golf,
come home to Ruby and Rich,
look around my garden,
and simply live my own life.

Why do we live such different lives?

I no longer feel the need to find one perfect answer.

I just know this:

Everyone has their own life.

And I want to live mine well.
