Why Does the LPGA Has Five Majors, While PGA Has Four?
And why does the LPGA Tour feel more global to me?
I have watched a lot of golf over the years, but recently I had a question.
Why does the LPGA have five major championships, while men's professional golf has four?
And there was something else I noticed.
The PGA TOUR feels very organized and structured to me. The LPGA Tour sometimes feels a little more spread out.
Was it really less organized?
Or was I just seeing two different kinds of professional golf?
The LPGA Has Five Majors
The five LPGA majors are:
- The Chevron Championship — USA
- U.S. Women's Open — USA
- KPMG Women's PGA Championship — USA
- Amundi Evian Championship — France
- AIG Women's Open — United Kingdom
The men's game has four:
- The Masters — USA
- PGA Championship — USA
- U.S. Open — USA
- The Open Championship — United Kingdom
So why five?
It is not simply because a sponsor decided to give a tournament more money and call it a major.
These tournaments became majors because of their history, tradition, importance, strong fields, and place in professional women's golf.
Some have very long histories.
The U.S. Women's Open began in 1946.
The KPMG Women's PGA Championship began in 1955.
The Chevron Championship goes back to 1972.
The Evian Championship became an LPGA major in 2013, and the AIG Women's Open became a major in 2001.
So the five majors were built over time.
And, of course, sponsors are very important.
Big sponsors bring big prize money, television coverage, better courses, and more attention to the tournaments.
So money matters.
But money alone does not create a major.
What About the Number of Tournaments?
Here is another interesting point.
Both tours have a surprisingly large number of tournaments in a season.
The PGA TOUR's 2026 FedExCup Regular Season has 34 official events, followed by a three-event FedExCup Playoffs.
And this is where the PGA TOUR feels especially organized to me.
The season has a clear structure:
Regular Season → Playoffs → Final
At the end of the regular season, the top 70 players qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs.
Then the field gets smaller:
70 players → 50 players → 30 players
The final 30 compete in the TOUR Championship, where the FedExCup champion is decided.
I really like this structure because I can easily understand what is happening.
The season builds toward something.
It feels like a long story with a clear ending.
The LPGA Has Its Own Special Championships, Too
The LPGA has something else that I find interesting.
Not every important tournament is a major.
At the beginning of the season, there is the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions.
It is a special event featuring recent LPGA Tour winners.
So the season can begin with something that feels like a small “champions-only” gathering.
Then, after many tournaments throughout the year, the season eventually reaches the CME Group Tour Championship.
The CME Group Tour Championship is the LPGA's season-ending championship.
The top 60 players in the Race to CME Globe qualify for this final event.
They compete for the season-ending title and a very large prize.
So the LPGA also has its own kind of season-long story:
Season Opening → Regular Tournaments → Five Majors → CME Group Tour Championship (Top 60)
When I first looked at the LPGA schedule, I didn't always see this structure immediately.
Maybe that is why it sometimes felt a little less organized to me than the PGA TOUR.
But the more I learn, the more I realize that there is actually quite a lot going on.
Then Why Does the LPGA Feel More Global?
This is the part that really interests me.
When I look at the LPGA schedule, I see women playing golf in many different parts of the world.
The tour travels to places such as:
the United States, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, France, and the United Kingdom.
It feels like the LPGA is constantly packing its golf bags and getting on another airplane. 😂
The PGA TOUR also has international events, of course.
But its center is much more clearly in the United States and North America.
The PGA TOUR feels like one large, organized sports league.
The LPGA feels more like a global golf journey.
Maybe that is why the LPGA schedule sometimes looks a little unusual to me.
One week may be in the United States.
Then Asia.
Then back to the United States.
Then Europe.
It moves around so much.
At first, I thought,
"Why doesn't this look as organized as the PGA TOUR?"
But now I have a different thought.
Maybe it is not less organized.
Maybe it is simply more international.
Two Different Golf Worlds
I think this is one interesting difference between men's and women's professional golf.
The PGA TOUR has a very clear season-long points race and a dramatic final playoff structure.
The LPGA also has its own season-long points race and a season-ending CME Group Tour Championship.
But when I look at the overall schedules, the LPGA feels more geographically spread out.
The PGA TOUR feels like a carefully organized season.
The LPGA feels like many golf countries connected by one tour.
Neither is better.
They simply have different histories and different personalities.
And I actually like this difference.
The more I watch the LPGA, the more I feel that women's golf is not just an American sport.
It is truly international.
Players from many countries compete together, travel together, and build their careers around the world.
That makes the LPGA especially interesting to me.
Maybe the LPGA doesn't look as organized to me because...
it is trying to organize the whole world. 🌎🏌️♀️
And I think that is pretty cool.
Golf first. Life second.
And today, I learned something new about golf again. 😊
KR Version
- The Chevron Championship — 미국
- U.S. Women's Open — 미국
- KPMG Women's PGA Championship — 미국
- Amundi Evian Championship —
- AIG Women's Open —
- The Masters — 미국
- PGA Championship — 미국
- U.S. Open — 미국
- The Open Championship —
시즌 초에는 Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions가 열린다.
PGA TOUR
LPGA에도 Race to CME Globe라는 시즌 포인트 경쟁과 CME Group Tour Championship이라는 최종전이 있다.
PGA TOUR
LPGA TOUR
Golf first. Life second.
