A Little Disaster in My Radish Garden -
This morning, I had a little disaster in my vegetable garden.
I had carefully prepared the soil and planted radish seeds at the right time. I wanted to grow my own vegetables for the winter. When the green leaves appeared, I was so happy. I even started picking some young leaves to eat.
I thought I was becoming quite an expert gardener!
Then, one day, lots of little butterflies began flying around my green radish patch.
At first, I didn't worry.
They need to eat, too, I thought. A few leaves won't hurt.
I even enjoyed watching them fly around my garden. Perhaps they liked my little patch as much as I did.
But then something strange happened.
The radish leaves started disappearing.😔😕
Yesterday, I thought I would pick some more young leaves to eat. But when I looked closely, there was hardly anything left to pick.
What had happened?
This morning, I decided to pull out the damaged plants.
And then came the surprise.
Every time I pulled up a radish plant, little caterpillars dropped out.
One or two? No!
There were so many of them!
Saying they fell like rain would be a little exaggeration, but honestly, I couldn't believe my eyes.
Where did all of you come from?
Then I began to understand what had happened. The butterflies flying around my garden had probably laid eggs on the plants. The eggs hatched, and the hungry caterpillars had been eating my radish leaves.
My winter vegetable garden had turned into a caterpillar restaurant!
If I had left everything as it was, I might have ended up with nothing to eat.
So I made a decision.
I pulled out all the damaged plants, turned over the soil with a shovel, and applied an insecticide according to the product instructions.
The work itself took only about thirty minutes.
But I still had to change my clothes and put my work clothes in the washing machine. It was quite a busy morning!
At first, I had been willing to share a little of my garden with the butterflies.
But I am human, too, and I have to protect what I grow.
Nature has its own way of surviving, and I have my own reasons for protecting my vegetable garden.
The butterflies were not bad, and the caterpillars were simply trying to survive. But I couldn't give them all my winter vegetables!
Nature doesn't care about my plans or how hard I have worked. Even when I prepare everything carefully, unexpected things can happen.
Perhaps I had been a little too proud of my new gardening skills.
Growing vegetables successfully and controlling everything in nature are two very different things.
Still, I decided not to take the whole thing too seriously.
In a few days, I plan to sow radish seeds again. Maybe the plants will grow well this time. Maybe something unexpected will happen again.
If they grow well, I'll enjoy eating them. If they don't, well, that's life!
I grow vegetables because I want to eat them, but I also enjoy watching them grow. I like seeing butterflies visit my garden and watching the seasons change.
That's why I don't want to cover everything with netting and keep every little creature away. I just need to pay closer attention next time.
Today's little disaster taught me one more lesson about gardening.
Just because it's my garden doesn't mean everything will grow the way I want it to.
But I'm happy that I can plant seeds again.
My winter radish-growing adventure isn't over yet.
Who will win the next round?
The gardener or the little butterflies?
Let's wait and see!
KR Version
