After 60, It Would Be Strange to Have No Health Problems ๐ - 60์ด ๋์ผ๋ฉด ํ์๊ฐ ์๋ ๊ฒ์ด ์ด์ ใ ใ
A cold wind suddenly arrived yesterday.
Just a few days ago, it still felt like autumn.
Now, it feels like winter is just around the corner.
This morning, I opened the window and immediately felt the cold air.
“Wow, it’s cold!”
So I put on warm winter pants and a warm jacket.
But I didn’t close the window.
I wanted to breathe in the cool autumn air as much as I could.
I like this kind of weather.
Then I started thinking about yesterday’s golf round.
There were golfers in their 50s, 60s, and 70s.
Just before teeing off, my younger golf buddy, who is in her 50s, suddenly said,
“Oh, I left my arm brace in the car. My arm hurts, so I need to wear it.”
And one of the older golfers in his 70s had a small bandage around his right little finger.
He told me he had been having a problem with it for about two months.
Eventually, he decided to have surgery this winter.
I looked at them and laughed.
Then I said,
“As we get older, it would actually be strange to be perfectly healthy. ๐”
At the time, I just said it as a joke.
But this morning, I thought about it again.
Maybe it is true.
I also have a lunch appointment today with a close friend who is five years older than me.
We have known each other for almost ten years.
She has been having gallbladder problems and recently had trouble digesting meat. A few days ago, she even had to go to the emergency room.
She is now getting another checkup at a major hospital and has been told that she may need surgery.
We were originally planning to have grilled meat for lunch and “recharge our batteries.”
But after hearing her story, we changed our plan.
Today, we are having a Korean set meal with fish and vegetables instead.
Sometimes life changes the menu for you. ๐
Because she is five years older than me, I sometimes wonder what my life might look like five years from now.
Of course, we are very different people.
She has always been physically a little more delicate than I am, and I have rarely seen her walk as fast as I do.
Still, seeing her deal with her health issues made me think about my own body.
And then I realized something.
I am also a patient.
I have my own aches and pains.
I go to the doctor when my hands hurt.
I have blood tests twice a year.
I go to Jeju City to pick up my medication.
So, yes...
I am a patient, too.
Haha.
Most of the time, I think of myself as a healthy person because I still play golf, swim, walk around all day, teach, write, and keep myself busy.
But the truth is, I am also someone who needs to take care of her body and get things checked from time to time.
Maybe this is simply part of life after 60.
We don't have to expect our bodies to remain completely trouble-free.
A little pain here.
A little checkup there.
Maybe some medicine.
Maybe even surgery when it is necessary.
And then...
Back to everyday life.
Yesterday, the golfers on the course showed me exactly what that looks like.
One golfer in his 50s had an aching arm.
One in his 70s had a bandage on his finger.
And I was standing there in my 60s, laughing and watching them.
But I am also someone who goes to the doctor because my hands hurt.
Haha.
So this morning, I came to a simple conclusion.
As we get older, it would be strange to have absolutely nothing wrong with our bodies.
Maybe health is not about having a body that never has a problem.
Maybe it is about having a body that has a few problems...
and still being able to live your life.
Today, I will eat fish and vegetables instead of grilled meat.
I will have lunch with my friend.
We will talk, laugh, and probably talk about our bodies a little more than we used to. ๐
Then I will come home and return to my ordinary life.
Golf.
Swimming.
Writing.
Teaching.
And, from time to time, visiting the doctor.
Haha.
I am a patient, too.
But I am a patient who is doing surprisingly well at living life.
And somehow, that makes me smile.
Maybe this is what health looks like after 60.
Not a perfectly healthy body.
Just a body that needs a little care...
while I keep living, enjoying, and being grateful for today.
I am a patient, too.
But I am a patient who is doing surprisingly well at living life.
