Aramco Korea Championship: Two Korean Stars I Will Be Watching - 아람코 코리아 챔피언십, 내가 특히 보고 싶은 두 명의 한국 선수

The 2026 Aramco Korea Championship begins today, October 8, at New Korea Country Club in Korea.

This year feels a little different.

The tournament has changed to a 72-hole individual stroke-play format, so there is no team competition this time. The 108-player field will compete over four days, with a $2 million prize fund.

But for me, there are two Korean players I will be watching especially closely.

Hyo Joo Kim and Sung Hyun Park.

Sung Hyun Park — 7:44 a.m.

Sung Hyun Park starts her first round at 7:44 a.m. from the 10th hole.

She will play alongside Miyu Yamashita of Japan and Casandra Alexander, who is currently one of the leading players in the LET season.

That is already an interesting group.

Park is a former world No. 1 and a major champion. She is also one of those players who can make me stop what I am doing and watch golf.

There is something about her presence on the course.

Her powerful swing, confidence, and unmistakable style make her fun to watch even before looking at the scorecard.

And New Korea Country Club is not an easy course.

Park has said that the course demands precision off the tee, so keeping the ball in the right places will be important.

I am curious to see how she starts this tournament.

Hyo Joo Kim — 12:15 p.m.

And then comes my other player to watch.

Hyo Joo Kim starts at 12:15 p.m. from the 1st hole.

Her playing partners are Danielle Kang and Anne Van Dam.

This is a particularly interesting group because Kim is not just another player in this tournament.

She is the two-time defending champion.

Kim won the inaugural Aramco Korea Championship in 2024 and defended her title in 2025. She remains the only champion in the tournament's history.

Now she is trying to do something even bigger:

win it for the third consecutive year.

A three-peat.

And honestly, this is one of the biggest reasons I will be watching this tournament.

I have always liked Hyo Joo Kim's golf.

Her game looks calm, precise, and controlled.

She doesn't seem to need to make golf look complicated.

She simply finds her rhythm and keeps going.

That kind of golf is beautiful to me.

Two Korean players. Two very different styles.

That is what makes this tournament especially interesting to me.

Sung Hyun Park brings power, charisma, and a strong presence.

Hyo Joo Kim brings precision, patience, and consistency.

Both are major champions.

Both have been world No. 1.

And both are playing in front of Korean fans at New Korea Country Club.

But they have very different stories this week.

Park is looking to make her presence felt in a strong international field.

Kim is trying to make history with a third straight victory.

More players worth watching

The field is extremely strong this year.

There are seven major champions in the field, including Hyo Joo Kim, Sung Hyun Park, Jeongeun Lee6, Danielle Kang, Yani Tseng, Suzann Pettersen, and Miyu Yamashita.

LET Order of Merit leader Casandra Alexander is also playing.

And there is another fascinating story: Suzann Pettersen is returning to competitive golf after four years away.

So there are plenty of stories to follow over the next four days.

But if you ask me which two players I will check first on the leaderboard?

Hyo Joo Kim and Sung Hyun Park.

One is chasing history.

The other is chasing her next moment.

And I am simply going to enjoy watching them play.

Golf is always more interesting when there is a story behind the score.

108명의 선수가 나흘 동안 경쟁하고, 총상금은 200만 달러다.

하지만 내가 이번 대회에서 특히 관심 있게 보고 싶은 선수는 따로 있다.

바로 김효주와 박성현이다.

박성현 — 오전 7시 44분

박성현은 오늘 오전 7시 44분, 10번 홀에서 출발한다.

함께 경기하는 선수는 일본의 야마시타 미유, 그리고 카산드라 알렉산더다.

아침부터 꽤 흥미로운 조편성이다.

박성현은 전 세계랭킹 1위이자 메이저 챔피언이다.

나는 박성현의 골프를 보면 이상하게 한 번 더 보게 된다.

강력한 스윙과 자신감, 그리고 특유의 존재감.

점수를 보기 전부터 선수 자체가 눈에 들어오는 골퍼가 있다면, 박성현이 그런 선수인 것 같다.

이번 대회가 열리는 뉴코리아 컨트리클럽은 쉽지 않은 코스다.

특히 티샷의 정확성이 중요한 코스로 알려져 있기 때문에 박성현이 첫날부터 얼마나 안정적으로 페어웨이를 지켜가는지가 중요한 관전 포인트가 될 것 같다.

나도 오늘 박성현이 어떤 모습으로 대회를 시작할지 궁금하다.

김효주 — 오후 12시 15분

그리고 내가 이번 대회에서 가장 관심 있게 보고 싶은 또 한 명.

김효주는 오후 12시 15분, 1번 홀에서 출발한다.

동반 선수는 다니엘 강과 앤 반 담이다.

이 조가 특별한 이유가 있다.

김효주는 그냥 이번 대회에 참가하는 선수가 아니다.

바로 2년 연속 디펜딩 챔피언이다.

김효주는 2024년 이 대회의 첫 우승자가 되었고, 2025년에도 우승하며 2연패를 달성했다.

그리고 이번에는 더 큰 기록에 도전한다.

3년 연속 우승.

나는 김효주의 골프를 좋아한다.

정확하고 차분하다.

경기를 하면서 굳이 골프를 복잡하게 만들지 않는 느낌도 좋다.

자신의 리듬을 찾으면 조용히 그 리듬을 이어간다.

나는 그런 골프가 참 좋다.

서로 다른 매력을 가진 두 명의 한국 선수

그래서 이번 대회가 나에게는 더욱 재미있다.

박성현은 파워와 강렬한 존재감.

김효주는 정확성과 차분함, 그리고 꾸준함.

두 선수 모두 전 세계랭킹 1위에 올랐던 선수이고, 메이저 우승 경험도 있다.

그리고 이번에는 한국 팬들 앞에서 경기를 한다.

하지만 이번 대회에서 두 선수가 만들어갈 이야기는 조금 다르다.

박성현은 자신의 존재감을 다시 한번 보여주기를 기대하게 만들고,

김효주는 3년 연속 우승이라는 새로운 기록에 도전한다.

그 밖에도 볼 만한 선수들

이번 대회에는 정말 좋은 선수들이 많이 출전한다.

김효주, 박성현을 비롯해 메이저 챔피언 7명이 출전한다.

그리고 LET 시즌 경쟁에서도 중요한 선수인 카산드라 알렉산더도 출전한다.

또 한 명 눈길을 끄는 선수는 수잔 페테르센이다.

오랜 공백 후 다시 경쟁 골프 무대에 돌아왔기 때문이다.

그래서 앞으로 나흘 동안 볼 이야기가 꽤 많을 것 같다.

하지만 내가 오늘 가장 먼저 확인하고 싶은 선수는 역시 두 명이다.

김효주와 박성현.

한 명은 역사를 만들기 위해 출발하고,

한 명은 다시 자신의 순간을 만들기 위해 출발한다.

나는 그저 두 선수가 골프하는 모습을 즐겁게 보고 싶다.
