At 60, I Realized My Heart Is Still in Its Twenties — I’ve Just Built More Wisdom Muscles (60

Now that I’ve lived to 60, I’ve realized something.

Getting older doesn’t necessarily mean that your heart gets older, too.

My heart is still in its twenties sometimes.

When I want to do something, I want to try it.
When I see something new, I get curious.
And when there’s something I really want to do well, I still get ambitious.

Today was a perfect example.

I went to the golf practice range, and for some reason, the swing that worked so beautifully yesterday just wouldn’t work today.

At first, I made a small adjustment.

Nope.

I changed something else.

Still no.

Before I knew it, golf practice had turned into a battle between me and my swing.

“Why isn’t this working?”

I gave myself so many sarcastic little smiles. 😏

There I was, 60 years old, holding a golf club and acting like a competitive twenty-something.

Eventually, after changing this and that, I managed to get about 80% of my swing back.

But by then, both my body and my mind were pretty much wrecked from the battle.

And that was when my 60-year-old wisdom finally kicked in.

“Go straight to the swimming pool!”

I knew that if I kept pushing myself, went home thinking about my swing, and tried to fix it again tomorrow, today’s little battle could turn into several days of aching muscles.

I know my body better now.

So I went straight to the pool.

I got into the water and slowly moved my body, letting the traces of today’s little golf battle settle down.

My mind was still thinking,

“What if I had done that swing this way…?”

But my body seemed to say,

“Enough fighting for today.”

😂😃💓

After moving around in the water for a while, my mind became quieter, too.

And then I went back home and taught my students.

At the golf range, I was a reckless twenty-something.

But when it came to taking care of my body, I was a pretty wise sixty-year-old.

Maybe this is one of the most practical kinds of wisdom we gain as we get older.

There were things I used to push through until the very end.

Now, I know when to stop.

I know how to listen to my body.

And I know when to change direction before a small problem becomes a bigger one.

That is what I call my wisdom muscles.

I didn’t get them from a book.

I built them through difficult times, painful experiences, mistakes, disappointments, and all the moments when life simply didn’t go the way I wanted.

Little by little, those experiences became muscles inside me.

So I still want to live with the heart of a twenty-year-old.

I want to stay curious.
I want to try new things.
I want to care about doing things well.
And sometimes, I still want to be a little ridiculously ambitious.

And yes, I still want to give myself a sarcastic little smile when my golf swing refuses to cooperate. 😂😍

The difference is that now, I bring sixty years of wisdom along with me.

Just like today.

My heart is in its twenties.
My body is sixty.
And between the two are the wisdom muscles I’ve built over sixty years.

My heart is still in its twenties.

I’ve just built a few more wisdom muscles along the way. 😂😇

KR Version
