How Will I Respond to Other People’s Moves? -
Sometimes, people test me.
“Let me see how she reacts.”
“Maybe this is okay.”
“Maybe she will say yes.”
Sometimes, their actions can feel rude or uncomfortable.
But I have started to think about this differently.
It is their freedom to try.
It is my freedom to respond.
I cannot control what another person does.
I can only control what I do next.
So, if someone suddenly asks me to play golf, I do not always say yes right away.
I can simply say,
“Let me check my schedule.”
Then I take a few minutes and think about it.
Do I really want to go?
Do I have the time?
Does it fit my day?
The same thing applies when someone invites me to a gathering.
Being invited does not mean that I have to go.
And when someone who has not contacted me for a very long time suddenly reaches out, I can decide how I want to respond.
I do not have to be angry.
I do not have to judge them.
And I do not have to say yes just because they asked.
I can simply make my own decision.
Before 60, I often did things because of work, social relationships, manners, or a sense of duty.
Sometimes I did things even when I did not really want to.
Life feels a little different after 60.
My time is valuable.
My money is valuable.
And most of all, my energy is valuable.
I do not want to spend my limited energy on things that do not really matter to me.
Taking care of myself first does not mean that I do not care about other people.
I believe it is the opposite.
When I am healthy, peaceful, and happy, I have more to give to others.
So these days, when someone tries something with me, I quietly think:
“That is your choice.”
And then I remind myself:
“But how I respond is my choice.”
This thought makes life much easier.
I do not need to change other people.
I do not need to explain everything.
I do not even need to be upset for a long time.
I simply decide what is right for me.
Maybe this is one of the little things I am learning after 60:
Other people can live their lives.
I can live mine.
They have the freedom to test the waters.
I have the freedom to say yes, no, or not this time.
And that is enough.
Lead your life.
That is one of the life skills I am learning at 60.
KR Version
Lead your life.
