I Did It Alone, but I Wished Someone Were There - 혼자 완성했지만, 누군가 있었으면 좋았던 날
This morning, I played nine holes of golf.
After lunch, I went to the driving range and practiced gently for almost an hour.
Then I received a delivery message.
My order had arrived!
I had ordered two long wall panels two days earlier. For about two years, I had wanted to change the wall behind my sofa. It was not an urgent job, so I kept putting it off.
Then, while watching YouTube, I found an idea I liked.
'This is it!'
My curtains are ivory, so I thought light wood-colored panels would look good with them.
As soon as I received the delivery message, I could no longer concentrate on my practice. I left the range and went straight home.
I did not even take a shower before starting the job.
But it was not as easy as I had expected.
The panels were slightly curved, and I had to attach two large pieces, one above the other. If they were not level or if the edges lifted, I could ruin the whole job.
I might even have to throw the panels away.
'I wish someone were here to hold one side for me.'
For a moment, I really thought that.
Of course, I could have called someone. There would probably have been people willing to help.
But after asking someone to come over for a short job, I would probably offer tea or food and spend some time chatting. I do enjoy talking with people, but today I wanted to finish my project and enjoy the result on my own.
I wanted a little help, but I also thought about the time and energy that might come afterward.
So I decided to try it myself.
First, I fixed the bottom panel in place with strong pins. It was easier to position, so I used it as my starting point. Then I lined up the top panel and fixed that in place, too.
Next, I peeled off the backing little by little, pressing the panel onto the wall as I went.
I finished the bottom panel first. Then I used it as a guide for the top one.
Slowly and carefully.
Fortunately, everything went better than I had expected.
After about an hour, both panels were in place. I cleaned up and stood in front of the sofa to look at my work.
Wow!
I did it all by myself!
I had finally finished something that had been on my mind for two years. The wall looked much neater, and the light wood color matched my ivory curtains beautifully.
What a relief!
But there was something extra in my happiness today.
I had discovered, once again, that I could do more things on my own than I sometimes imagined.
Of course, having someone hold one side of the panel would have made the job easier. There are moments when I wish someone were nearby.
Still, I like my life on my own. I can decide how to spend my time, do things my way, and rest whenever I want.
Having a moment when I need a little help does not mean I am unhappy with my life.
Living alone has its inconveniences. But living with someone does not mean everything will always be easier, either.
Perhaps the important question is not which life is perfect, but how we find our own way of living within the life we choose.
Today, I put up two wall panels.
And I reminded myself of something simple.
There are more things I can do on my own than I sometimes think.
I wished someone had been there to help.
But in the end, I did it myself.
And today, that is enough.
Living alone does not mean I always want to be alone.
I enjoy having my own space and deciding how to spend my time. But I also enjoy playing golf with others, greeting familiar faces at the driving range, and sharing a few laughs.
Sometimes, when I am doing something by myself, I wish someone were there to give me a hand. At other times, when I have spent a lot of time with people, I look forward to being alone again.
I think both feelings are natural.
When we are always with someone, we may long for some time on our own. And when we spend too much time alone, meeting people and sharing a little happiness can make our day brighter.
Life is not about choosing between being alone and being with others. Each has its own joys and inconveniences.
For me, the best part is being able to enjoy both: the freedom of living my own way and the pleasure of sharing moments with other people.
I don't need someone beside me all the time. But when someone is there, I can appreciate that, too.
KR Version
