I Happened to Watch This Live. What a Moment. -
Austin Smotherman’s 100th PGA TOUR Start — and His First Win
Today, I happened to watch the final round of the Bank of Utah Championship live.
At first, I was just going to watch a little golf.
But as the round went on, I became more interested.
Before I knew it, I was watching one player very closely.
Austin Smotherman.
Then I found out something that made the moment even more special.
Today was his 100th career start on the PGA TOUR.
And even more amazingly,
it was his first PGA TOUR victory.
What a moment.
His First Win Came on His 100th Start
Smotherman opened the tournament with a 63.
Then he shot an incredible 62 in the second round.
He followed that with a 65 in the third round and a 68 in the final round.
His final score was 26-under 258, two shots ahead of Doug Ghim.
But the final round was not perfect.
He made a double bogey on the 13th hole, and his lead became much smaller.
That could have changed everything.
Instead, he made a birdie on the very next hole.
Then another birdie on No. 16.
He made a bogey on No. 17, but finished with a birdie on the 18th.
And that was it.
His first PGA TOUR victory.
I Happened to Watch It Live
This is what stayed with me today.
Watching a golf tournament later and knowing the result is one thing.
Watching it live is completely different.
You see the player's face.
You see how he reacts after a mistake.
You see how he walks to the next shot.
And sometimes, you can almost feel the tension.
I was simply sitting there watching.
Then, when that final putt went in, I thought,
“Wow… his 100th PGA TOUR start, and his first win.”
That felt special.
100 Starts Means Something
Winning on the PGA TOUR is incredibly difficult.
And reaching 100 starts means a golfer has already spent years competing, traveling, practicing, struggling, and trying again.
Smotherman had been a professional golfer for about ten years.
He had already experienced wins on the Korn Ferry Tour, and he came close to winning on the PGA TOUR before.
But the first PGA TOUR victory had not come yet.
Until today.
His 100th start became the day he finally lifted a PGA TOUR trophy.
Sometimes, 99 starts are not failures.
They are simply part of the road to No. 100.
This Game Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
One thing Smotherman said after the victory really stayed with me:
“This game doesn’t have to be perfect.”
I understand that feeling.
Golf can become harder when we try too hard to be perfect.
One bad shot can affect the next shot.
One mistake can stay in our heads much longer than it should.
But today's final round was not perfect either.
There was a double bogey.
There was a bogey.
There were probably plenty of moments when he had to reset and focus again.
And yet, he won.
Maybe that is one of the beautiful things about golf.
You don't have to play a perfect game to have a great day.
More Than a Number
After watching today's round, the number 100 feels a little different to me.
It is easy to say,
“100 starts without a win.”
But I think there is another way to look at it.
100 starts means 100 chances to keep going.
And on the 100th one,
he finally got it.
I also love the fact that I happened to watch this tournament live.
There are so many golf tournaments.
So many players.
So many rounds.
And somehow, today, I was watching this one.
On the day a golfer made his 100th PGA TOUR start...
and won for the first time.
I think I will remember this moment for a long time.
Golf sometimes gives us these little surprises.
You just have to be there when they happen.
Today, I happened to be there.
Well...
in front of my screen. 😊

KR Version
PGA TOUR 100
The Bank of Utah Championship
Austin Smotherman.
PGA TOUR
This game doesn't have to be perfect.
“This game doesn’t have to be perfect.”
PGA TOUR
You just have to be there when it happens.
