I Met Someone Before the Flowers Bloomed -

Yesterday, I had lunch with a close friend.

The autumn sun was quite strong, but we did not want to go home right after lunch. So we decided to walk for about 30 minutes.

There is a small park near my home called Jeongmosi Shelter, above Jeongbang Waterfall.

I had discovered it while walking Ruby and Rich.

It is surrounded by trees, so it is cool even on sunny days. A small stream runs through the park, and there are little waterfalls and stream along the way.

I had always liked this place.

But recently, I noticed something was changing.

More and more flowers were being planted.

I often wondered,

Who is doing all this?

Yesterday, I finally found out.

Two people were working with the flowers in the park. They told us that they were slowly turning the park into a beautiful garden.

I suddenly had so many questions.

“What kind of flowers are you planting?”

“When did you start?”

“Are you changing the whole park?”

“What kind of flower is this?”

I kept asking questions. 😊

Then I learned that one of them was Kim Myung-soo, a poet who lives in this neighborhood.

He used to work as a goldsmith. For many years, he has also volunteered his time to care for flowers and public spaces around Seogwipo.

He now works with the city in some ways, but he still comes to the park whenever he has time.

He chooses flowers, checks the plants, thinks about where each flower should go, and slowly designs the garden himself.

He told us that he sometimes comes early in the morning or even on weekends.

But what stayed with me most was not his work.

It was his face.

He had polio as a child and now uses a wheelchair.

Still, he was happily working with the flowers, looking closely at the ground and talking about his garden.

He looked genuinely happy.

I listened to him for a long time.

And I kept saying,

“Thank you so much.”

“We really appreciate what you are doing.”

“It makes me so happy to have a place like this near my home.”

Then he said something that touched me.

“Thank you for taking an interest and encouraging me.”

For a moment, I felt something warm in my heart.

I had simply gone for a walk.

He had simply been doing his work for many years.

But somehow, two strangers were saying thank you to each other.

Maybe this is what human warmth is.

We walk along our neighborhood paths.

We see flowers.

We hear running water.

We enjoy clean and peaceful parks.

But behind those ordinary moments, there are people quietly giving their time and energy to take care of these places.

Most of us simply walk past them without knowing.

Yesterday, I happened to meet one of those people.

And after hearing his story, the park felt different to me.

I know it is not a finished garden yet.

In the third photo, you can still see the soil. The young plants are small and spread out. Jeju stones have been placed around them.

But I actually like this photo very much.

Because it is not finished yet.

I want to come back someday when the flowers are everywhere.

And then I will probably think,

“I met him when this garden was just beginning.”

After walking around the park, my friend and I went to a café and had patbingsu.

Maybe rain was coming. Both of us felt a little tired.

We had spent almost four hours together before finally going home.

It was not a special trip.

We simply had lunch, took a walk, met someone in a neighborhood park, listened to his story, had some dessert, and went home.

But somehow, my heart felt warmer.

Some people plant the flowers.
Some people stop and notice them.

Yesterday, I saw two people quietly giving something to each other:

one person giving his time and care,

and another person giving sincere appreciation.

Maybe this is the kind of life I like.

A living life, rather than a perfect life.

And sometimes, that life is made more beautiful by ordinary people who quietly care for small places around us.

But the little garden in the last photo was not just a flower bed.

He was creating the shape of Jeju Island with Jeju stones and plants.

At first, I thought it was simply a new garden under construction. There was still a lot of soil, and the young plants were small and scattered.

But after he explained it to me, I looked at it again.

“Oh, it’s Jeju!” 😊

It was an unfinished Jeju Island, slowly coming to life as a garden.

I thought that was beautiful.

KR Version
