I'd Rather Live Fully Than Simply Live Longer -

Today, I practiced golf like a golfer in my twenties.

Why? (smile)

Let me tell you what happened.

Am I Living Like a Little Old Lady?

For a while, my fingers had been hurting, so I became very careful with my golf practice.

If I hit a few good shots, I would stop. Even when I felt like practicing a little longer, I would tell myself to take it easy.

Of course, taking care of my body is important.

But little by little, I started getting bored with this careful way of living.

Then one day, I suddenly realized something.

Wait a minute! Am I living like a little old lady already?

I'm only 60! I still consider myself young! (smile)

When did I become so careful about everything?

I was acting as if I had to save every bit of energy for some distant future.

But that's not really me.

I love golf. I love swinging freely and watching the ball fly. I want to keep improving my swing and enjoy the game for as long as I can.

I don't want to spend so much time protecting myself that I forget to have fun.

A Big Bowl of Soup and a Big Decision

Today, I decided to do things differently.

Before going to the driving range, I went to one of my favorite restaurants and had a big bowl of beef soup with lots of bean sprouts.

I ate until I was completely full. (smile)

Then I made up my mind.

Today, I would work on making my swing more consistent. As long as my body felt okay, I would swing freely and enjoy myself.

And guess what happened?

My shots started getting better!

The most surprising part was my 4-hybrid. It's usually the club I struggle with the most.

A little while ago, another golfer gave me a simple tip.

Swing it like a 6-iron, and after your backswing, rotate your left hip toward the target.

I tried to apply that tip to my own swing. I focused on moving my left hip without letting my upper body rush forward.

Suddenly, I started making much better contact.

The ball flew straight ahead!

Wow!

Was this really my 4-hybrid? The very club that usually gave me so much trouble?

I couldn't believe it myself! (smile)

My swing felt powerful and smooth. I could feel when to relax and when to put power into the swing. I made some beautiful swing arcs, and the ball traveled nicely.

I also had plenty of fun with my free swings.

I wanted to keep going, but my practice time was up.

What a shame!

Of course, I can't say that my good shots were all because of my new attitude. I had been working on my swing for a while, and the tip I received also helped.

But today's practice reminded me of something important.

Maybe I had been taking such good care of my body that I wasn't enjoying the things I loved enough.

Don't Save Everything for Later!

There's a funny Korean expression that goes something like this:

"If you keep saving something for too long, it might end up going to waste!"

We say it when someone saves something but never actually uses it.

Today, I started wondering if the same thing could happen to life.

What if I spend so much time saving my energy, protecting my body, and being careful that I forget to enjoy the life I have now?

I don't want that!

I'm 60 now, and I would love to keep playing golf well into my seventies.

Of course, I hope I can keep playing even longer. But I don't know what my body will be able to do ten or twenty years from now.

That's exactly why I want to enjoy golf while I can.

I don't want to wait until some distant future to enjoy the things I love today.

I'm not saying I should ignore pain or push myself no matter what. When my body needs rest, I'll rest.

But when I feel good, I want to practice, swing freely, and enjoy myself without worrying quite so much.

There's a difference between taking care of your body and holding yourself back too much.

And I think I had been holding myself back.

I'd Rather Live Fully Than Simply Live Longer

Living a long, healthy life would be wonderful. I hope I can live well into my eighties or nineties.

But I don't want to make living longer my only goal.

I want to enjoy my life, too.

I want to play golf, keep writing, enjoy my home, spend time with Ruby and Rich, and continue discovering new things about myself.

I want to be the kind of person who still gets excited about a good golf shot and laughs at herself when something unexpected happens.

And I don't want to become so careful about growing older that I forget to enjoy being the person I am today.

So here's my new plan.

I'll take care of my body, but I won't be quite so careful all the time.

I'll rest when I need to, but when I feel good, I'll let myself enjoy what I love.

After all, what's the point of taking such good care of myself if I never let myself have some fun?

I'd rather live fully than simply live longer.

And if I can live a long life and enjoy it along the way, even better!

Today's golf practice gave me more than a few good shots. It reminded me that I'm still Angie, and I want to keep living my own way.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a 4-hybrid to practice with!

Just kidding. I'll give my fingers a break first. (smile)

KR Version
