Today, while watching a women’s golf tournament, I noticed the name Aramco Korea Championship.

At first, I honestly thought:

“Is Aramco connected to America?”

The name includes American, so it seemed like a reasonable guess. 😊

But when I looked into it, I found an interesting history.

ARAMCO = Arabian American Oil Company

The company began with American involvement in oil exploration and development in Saudi Arabia.

Here is the short version of its history:

1933 — Standard Oil of California began oil exploration in Saudi Arabia.
1938 — Commercial oil production began.
1944 — The company was renamed Arabian American Oil Company, or ARAMCO.
Over the following decades, the Saudi government gradually acquired the company’s shares.
1980 — The Saudi government acquired 100% ownership.
1988 — The modern Saudi Aramco was officially established.

So, yes, the name has “American” in it.

But today, Saudi Aramco is Saudi Arabia’s major global energy company.

I started by watching a golf tournament.

Then I learned about LET.

Then PIF.

And now I know a little about the history of Aramco, too.

One golf tournament, and my learning keeps going in unexpected directions.

Learning never really ends.
Maybe that is one reason life stays interesting. 😊

KR Version

ARAMCO = Arabian American Oil Company
