My Life Feels Different After Learning to Give People Space -

I think life is better when we live with people rather than completely alone.

During COVID, many of my relationships naturally became distant.

In some ways, that was a good experience for me.

I learned that I could enjoy being alone.
I learned that I could spend quiet days by myself and still be perfectly fine.

But after a while, I realized something very simple.

I actually like people.

Maybe I have always been that way.

I enjoy living alone, and I love my quiet time.

But warm conversations, laughter, sharing a meal, playing golf together, or simply having a small connection with someone are still precious parts of my life.

I just had to learn a different way of being with people.

For a long time, I think I was a little bit of a dictator.

Especially with my family.

Because I was older and had experienced many things, I sometimes thought I knew more.

So I would say,

“Let's do this together.”

“Let's go there.”

“This will be fun!”

And then I would organize all kinds of family events and almost force everyone to enjoy them with me. 😂😁

At the time, I thought I was simply trying to make everyone happy.

But now I see things differently.

My father, who lived to be 90, passed away last year.

My mother is getting older, too, and moving around is becoming more difficult for her.

And my younger siblings are not little brothers and sisters anymore.

They have their own families.

They are adults who have built their own lives and gathered their own experiences.

In some ways, they may even have more mature life experiences than I do.

I think I forgot that for a while.

I used to think I knew a lot.

Now I understand that what I really know well is the life I have lived.

I have experienced my life.

Other people have experienced theirs.

Even when we are family, we have lived through different things, met different people, made different choices, and learned different lessons.

So the answer I found in my life does not have to be the answer for someone else.

This realization has changed more than just my family relationships.

It has changed the way I connect with people in general.

I used to keep my work life and private life very separate.

Very separate. 😂💓

Even after playing golf with someone, I often went straight home.

Sometimes I did not even stay for lunch.

Golf was golf.

My private life was my private life.

But these days, I have become a little more flexible.

If I am not too busy, I sometimes have lunch with my golf friends.

Maybe once a month.

That may not sound like a big change.

But for me, it is.

I am not giving up my personal boundaries.

I am simply choosing to share a little more of my life when I feel comfortable.

Something similar happened recently with someone I know through my work-related life.

He once asked if I could teach him English.

At first, I said no.

But later, I thought about it again.

I did not want to start formal lessons, but perhaps I could give him a little help.

So he sent me some very basic English sentences he wanted to learn.

I recorded the English parts in my own voice and sent them to him.

He was very grateful.

For now, I decided to send him something short about once a week.

It is a very small thing.

But I realized something through it.

Keeping my boundaries and opening my heart a little are not opposite things.

I can say no when I need to.

And I can say yes when I want to.

I can decide how much of myself I want to share.

Maybe this is another thing I am learning at 60.

I do not have to choose between being completely independent and being close to people.

There is a comfortable space somewhere in between.

And I like that space.

I have also learned something else.

Being 60 does not mean I have to live a perfectly controlled life.

In fact, I think trying too hard to avoid every mistake can make life less interesting.

Sometimes a little mistake becomes a funny story.

Sometimes an unexpected choice creates a new connection.

Sometimes opening the door just a little leads to something I never planned.

Maybe that is part of the fun of getting older.

I still want to be the person who decides how I live my life.

I live my life.

Other people live theirs.

But when we want to, we can meet somewhere in the middle.

We can have lunch.

We can play golf.

We can help each other with something small.

We can laugh.

And then we can go back to our own lives.

Funny enough, after I learned to give people a little more space, my relationships became more comfortable.

When I stopped trying to lead people, I could see them more clearly.

When I stopped trying to persuade them, I could listen better.

And when I stopped assuming that I knew what was best, I became more curious about their lives.

I am still learning.

But these days, I feel lighter.

I can spend time with people when I want to.

I can be alone when I want to.

I can help someone when I can.

And I can politely say no when I cannot.

I get to choose.

Letting go of people and respecting people are completely different things.

I still like people.

Maybe I even enjoy people more now.

I simply do not feel responsible for directing their lives anymore.

I have experienced my life.

Other people are experiencing theirs.

Maybe living well together does not mean pulling each other along.

Maybe it means respecting each other's lives and meeting warmly whenever we want to.

And sometimes, a small change can tell the whole story.

I used to finish golf and go straight home.

Now, once in a while, I sit down with my golf friends and have lunch.

I still go home afterward.

But these days, I am not in such a hurry.

Maybe that is what has changed.

I have not learned to love people less.

I think I am finally learning how to love people a little better. 😀💕

KR Version
