My Makeover Living Room and a Sea of Yellow Chrysanthemums - 새롭게 바뀐 거실, 그리고 나를 설레게 하는 노란 국화꽃 더미
Have you ever made your home feel like a different place for less than $50?
Yesterday, I gave my living room a complete makeover with foam wall panels that cost only 38,000 won.
I also covered my sofa with a beautiful fabric cover I had bought some time ago. The whole room feels different now. When I sit on my sofa, I feel as if I have checked into a lovely new hotel.
But the best part isn't the money I saved.
It's the feeling of accomplishment.
The job required some help, but I decided to challenge myself and see if I could do it. And I did it without failing!
That little success gave me more confidence in myself. Sometimes, trying something new and discovering that we can actually do it is more rewarding than we expect.
Now, I have something else to look forward to.
In front of my house, a row of yellow chrysanthemums is growing beside my vegetable garden. Each flower is small, but the bushes are covered with so many little blooms.
In about a week, I expect to see them in full bloom. I should be able to enjoy their beautiful yellow flowers from my living room for almost a month.
Just imagine sitting on my newly decorated sofa, looking out at a sea of yellow flowers!
One of my close friends is enjoying a month-long stay somewhere for seven million won (US$5,200). I'm happy for her, too.
As for me, I've found my own kind of happiness for less than US$50. Of course, if I included the value of my time, cleaning, and all the work I did, the total would be a little higher. (Smile!)
But that's not the point.
I love my home and my garden. My vegetable patch gives me something to eat, and my flowers give me something beautiful to look at.
Food to grow, flowers to enjoy, and a home I can make my own. What more could I ask for?
Sometimes, happiness doesn't require a luxury hotel or an expensive trip.
Sometimes, it simply means looking around your own home and thinking,
“Wow, I did this myself. And I love it!”
That's exactly how I feel today.
Every autumn, I look forward to seeing my chrysanthemums bloom. But why am I even more excited this year?
As I write this post, I find myself checking the little flower buds in my garden. They haven't fully bloomed yet, but just seeing them makes me smile.
Perhaps it's because my living room has just been transformed, and I'm already imagining how beautiful the yellow flowers will look from my sofa.
Or perhaps it's simply because I'm learning to appreciate the little things in my everyday life more than ever.
Whatever the reason, I'm enjoying the anticipation as much as I will enjoy the flowers themselves.
The flowers haven't bloomed yet, but the happiness has already begun.

5만 원도 안 되는 돈으로 집을 전혀 다른 공간처럼 바꿀 수 있을까?
어제 나는 거실 벽에 폼월을 붙여 거실을 완전히 새롭게 바꾸었다. 폼월 구매 비용은 단돈 38,000원!
예전에 사두었던 멋진 천 소파 커버까지 씌우니 거실 전체의 분위기가 달라졌다. 새롭게 바뀐 소파에 앉아 있으면 마치 멋진 호텔에 와 있는 것 같다.
하지만 내가 가장 기분 좋은 이유는 돈을 아꼈기 때문만은 아니다.
내가 직접 해냈다는 뿌듯함 때문이다.
누군가의 도움이 필요할 수도 있는 작업이었지만, 일단 도전해 보기로 했다. 그리고 실패하지 않고 완성했다!
이 작은 성공이 나 자신에 대한 자신감을 조금 더 키워 주었다. 새로운 일을 시도하고, 내가 해낼 수 있다는 사실을 직접 확인하는 것은 생각보다 큰 기쁨을 준다.
그런데 이제 나에게 또 다른 설렘이 기다리고 있다.
우리 집 마당 앞, 텃밭 왼쪽으로 노란 국화가 길게 심어져 있다. 꽃 한 송이 한 송이는 작지만, 덤불마다 꽃이 빼곡하게 달려 있다.
일주일쯤 지나면 국화가 활짝 필 것 같다. 그러면 거실에 앉아서 거의 한 달 동안 아름다운 노란 꽃을 감상할 수 있을 것이다.
새롭게 바뀐 소파에 앉아 노란 꽃의 물결을 바라보는 모습을 상상해 보라!
친한 언니는 700만 원을 들여 한 달 살이를 즐길예정이다. 언니도 언니만의 방식으로 행복을 누리는 것이다.
그리고 나는 5만 원도 안 되는 돈으로 나만의 행복을 찾았다. 물론 내 시간과 청소, 직접 작업한 수고까지 비용으로 계산한다면 실제로는 조금 더 들었겠지만. 😂😀
하지만 중요한 것은 돈의 액수가 아니다.
나는 우리 집과 마당이 참 좋다. 텃밭에서는 먹거리를 얻고, 마당의 꽃에서는 아름다움을 얻는다.
먹거리도 있고, 볼거리도 있고, 내 손으로 가꾸어 가는 집도 있다. 이보다 더 무엇을 바랄까?
때로는 행복을 위해 비싼 호텔이나 특별한 여행이 필요한 것은 아니다.
그저 내가 사는 공간을 둘러보며 이렇게 생각할 수 있다면 충분하다.
“와, 내가 이걸 직접 해냈네! 그리고 정말 마음에 들어!”
오늘 내가 느끼는 행복이 바로 그런 것이다.
매년 가을이면 국화꽃이 피기를 기다린다. 그런데 올해는 왜 유난히 더 설레는 걸까?
이 글을 쓰면서도 마당에 나가 국화꽃 봉오리를 확인하게 된다. 아직 활짝 피지는 않았지만, 봉오리만 바라봐도 미소가 지어진다.
어쩌면 새롭게 바뀐 거실에 앉아 노란 국화가 만개한 모습을 상상하고 있기 때문인지도 모르겠다.
아니면 예전보다 일상의 작은 즐거움을 더 깊이 느끼게 되었기 때문일 수도 있다.
이유가 무엇이든, 나는 꽃이 활짝 피었을 때의 기쁨만큼이나 꽃이 피기를 기다리는 지금 이 순간도 즐기고 있다.
꽃은 아직 피지 않았지만, 행복은 이미 시작되었다.
