My Simple Philosophy About Spending - 방 한 칸에 살아도 마음이 편하면 된다 — 나의 소비 철학
I have had a simple idea since I was young.
Even if I live in just one room, I want to feel at peace.
Of course, living in a nice house, buying nice things, and traveling are all good. But if I have to worry about money all the time, I do not think that kind of life is worth it.
My spending rule is very simple.
If I have the money, I do it. If I don't, I don't.
If I want to travel but cannot afford it, I can wait for another chance. If I want something, I do not have to buy it right away.
Golf is the same.
I love golf, but I do not change my golf clubs every time a new model comes out. My current clubs are good enough for me to enjoy the game.
Of course, if I really need new clubs and have enough money, I can buy them. But if I don't have the money, I can keep using the clubs I already have.
I can buy them when I have the money. If I don't, I can still enjoy golf.
How Credit Cards Change the Way We Spend
Credit cards make it easy to buy things now and pay for them later. I use credit cards, too. They are very useful when we manage them well.
The problem is not the credit card itself.
Because we can buy things with money we do not have yet, spending money we still need to pay back can start to feel normal.
But being able to pay with a credit card does not always mean we can truly afford something.
If we only think about the fun we can have today and forget about the money we must pay back later, that spending may become a burden.
Of course, everyone has a different way of spending money. Some people save for a trip, while others prefer to enjoy the experience now. I respect that people can make different choices.
But I want to spend money within my means.
The Freedom I Want
I do not believe I need a bigger house or more expensive things than other people to be happy.
Playing golf, living with Ruby and Rich, and writing my blog bring me a lot of joy.
Of course, it is nice to enjoy better things when I can. But my life is not less valuable when I do not have them.
I enjoy spending money, but I also know that I can have a good time without buying anything.
Perhaps true freedom is not only being able to buy what we want. It is also being comfortable with waiting, even when we really want something.
If I have the money, I enjoy it. If I don't, I wait.
For me, spending money is not about showing other people what I have. It is about making my life more comfortable and enjoyable.
My belief has stayed the same since I was young.
Even if I live in just one room, I want to feel at peace.
And I want to keep living within my means and enjoying the things I love for many years to come.

나는 어릴 때부터 이런 생각을 하며 살았다.
방 한 칸에 살아도 마음이 편하면 된다.
좋은 집에 살고, 좋은 물건을 사고, 여행을 다니며 사는 것도 좋다. 하지만 그런 것들을 누리기 위해 마음이 불편해진다면, 나에게는 그다지 매력적인 삶이 아니다.
나의 소비 철학은 아주 단순하다.
돈이 있으면 하고, 돈이 없으면 안 한다.
여행을 가고 싶어도 지금 내 형편으로 감당하기 어렵다면 다음 기회를 기다리면 된다. 갖고 싶은 물건이 있어도 꼭 지금 사야 하는 것은 아니다.
골프도 마찬가지다.
나는 골프를 좋아하지만, 새 골프채가 나왔다고 해서 무조건 바꾸지는 않는다. 지금 가진 클럽으로도 충분히 골프를 즐길 수 있기 때문이다.
물론 정말 필요하고 경제적으로 여유가 있다면 바꿀 수 있다. 하지만 돈이 없다면? 그냥 지금 쓰는 클럽으로 치면 된다.
돈이 생기면 그때 사면 되고, 생기지 않으면 지금 가진 것으로 즐기면 된다.
신용카드가 바꾼 소비문화
요즘은 신용카드 덕분에 물건을 사고 돈을 나중에 낼 수 있다. 나도 신용카드를 사용한다. 잘 관리하면 매우 편리한 결제 수단이다.
문제는 신용카드 자체가 아니다.
아직 내게 없는 돈으로도 원하는 것을 살 수 있다 보니, 때로는 빚을 내서 소비하는 일이 너무 자연스러워진 것은 아닐까?
카드로 결제할 수 있다는 것과 그 물건을 살 경제적 여유가 있다는 것은 다르다.
미래에 갚을 돈이 있다는 사실을 잊고 지금의 즐거움만 생각한다면, 언젠가는 그 소비가 부담으로 돌아올 수 있다.
물론 사람마다 소비 방식은 다르다. 어떤 사람은 여행을 위해 저축하고, 어떤 사람은 지금의 경험을 더 중요하게 생각한다. 각자의 선택을 존중한다.
다만 나는 내가 감당할 수 있는 범위 안에서 소비하고 싶다.
내가 원하는 것은 자유로운 삶
나는 남보다 더 큰 집에 살거나 더 비싼 물건을 소유해야 행복하다고 생각하지 않는다.
내가 좋아하는 골프를 치고, 루비와 리치와 함께 생활하고, 글을 쓰며 하루를 보내는 것. 지금 내게는 이런 일들이 큰 행복이다.
물론 더 좋은 것을 누릴 수 있다면 좋다. 하지만 그것이 없다고 해서 내 삶이 부족해지는 것은 아니다.
나는 돈을 쓰는 즐거움도 알고 있다. 하지만 돈을 쓰지 않고도 충분히 즐거울 수 있다는 사실도 안다.
어쩌면 진정한 자유는 원하는 것을 모두 살 수 있는 능력뿐 아니라, 원하는 것이 있어도 지금 사지 않을 수 있는 마음에서 시작되는지도 모른다.
돈이 있으면 즐기고, 돈이 없으면 기다린다.
나에게 소비란 남에게 보여주기 위한 것이 아니라, 내 삶을 조금 더 편안하고 즐겁게 만드는 방법이다.
어릴 때부터 지금까지 내가 지켜 온 생각은 변하지 않았다.
방 한 칸에 살아도 마음이 편하면 된다.
그리고 나는 앞으로도 내 형편에 맞게 살면서, 내가 좋아하는 것들을 오래도록 즐기고 싶다.
