BMW Ladies Championship — A Dramatic Final Round

Today, October 25, I watched the final round of the LPGA BMW Ladies Championship at Pine Beach Golf Links in Haenam, South Korea.

I was disappointed to hear that Jin Young Ko, who had originally been expected to play, did not compete in the end. Six players also had to withdraw during the tournament because of injuries.

Even professional golfers can have a hard time completing all four rounds. Golf is not easy, even for the best players in the world.

And then came the final round!

Hae-ran Ryu had been leading the tournament after three rounds. Could she keep her lead and win? Or would someone catch up with her?

Nobody knew until the very end.

Finally, Yuri Yoshida of Japan won the tournament with a total score of 17 under par, just one shot ahead of the runners-up. It was her first LPGA Tour victory, which made the win even more special.

Hye-jin Choi played an excellent final round and finished tied for second with Hae-ran Ryu.

Another result that made me happy was Hyo-joo Kim's performance. She finished tied for fourth at 15 under par!

She did not win, but I think a fourth-place finish among so many talented players is still something to celebrate.

Golf is such an interesting sport.

You can play wonderfully for three rounds, but you still cannot relax until the final round is over. At the same time, players who are behind still have a chance to win.

One shot or one putt can change the whole game.

As an amateur golfer, I understand this feeling, too. Sometimes, I hit the ball beautifully at the driving range, but my shots do not work the same way on the golf course. Then, when my confidence comes back, I suddenly hit a wonderful shot!

That is why I enjoy watching professional golf. I am interested not only in who wins but also in how players handle the pressure.

Today, Yuri Yoshida was the winner. Congratulations to her!

And congratulations to Hye-jin Choi and Hae-ran Ryu for their tied second-place finish, and to Hyo-joo Kim for her tied fourth-place finish.

One shot can change everything.

In golf, just as in life, the next moment has not been decided yet.

So, let's not feel too disappointed or too confident too early.

There is always another shot to play!

I Thought Her Luck Was Gone!

When Yuri Yoshida made a par on the 18th hole, missing her good birdy chance, I thought her luck was gone.

Hae-ran Ryu and Hye-jin Choi were just one shot behind her. Since they were playing in the group behind Yoshida, I thought one of them might catch up with her. We might even see a playoff!

But golf is full of surprises.

Just when I thought Yoshida might lose the tournament, she still managed to win.

Watching golf sometimes feels a little like gambling. You think you know what is going to happen, but suddenly everything changes. A player who seems lucky can lose that luck, while someone who seems to be in trouble can still come out on top.

Of course, golf is not just about luck. Skill matters a lot. But when the competition is this close, you never really know what will happen until the very end.

That is what makes golf so exciting — and sometimes so frustrating! 😊

BMW Ladies Championship — A Dramatic Final Round

오늘(10월 25일), 전남 해남 파인비치 골프링크스에서 막을 내린 LPGA BMW 레이디스 챔피언십을 지켜보았다.

원래 출전할 것으로 기대했던 고진영 선수가 최종적으로 출전하지 않았다는 소식부터 아쉬웠다. 대회 도중 경기를 마치지 못하고 시합도중 부상으로 기권한 선수도 6명이나 있었다. 프로 선수들에게도 4라운드 대회를 끝까지 치르는 일이 결코 쉽지만은 않다는 생각이 들었다.

그리고 마지막 라운드!

3라운드까지 선두를 달렸던 유해란 선수가 우승을 지킬 수 있을지, 뒤에서 추격하는 선수들이 역전할 수 있을지 끝까지 알 수 없는 경기였다.

결국 일본의 요시다 유리가 최종 17언더파로 한 타 차 우승을 차지했다. LPGA 투어 첫 우승이라고 하니 더욱 의미 있는 순간이었을 것이다.

최혜진 선수도 마지막 날 맹추격하며 공동 2위에 올랐고, 유해란 선수 역시 공동 2위로 대회를 마쳤다.

내가 반가웠던 또 하나의 결과는 김효주 선수의 공동 4위였다. 최종 15언더파!

우승은 아니었지만, 세계적인 선수들이 경쟁하는 무대에서 좋은 성적을 거두었다는 사실만으로도 박수를 보내고 싶다.

골프는 참 흥미로운 스포츠다.

앞선 라운드에서 아무리 좋은 성적을 거두어도 마지막 날까지 긴장을 놓을 수 없다. 반대로 뒤에서 출발한 선수에게도 기회가 찾아온다. 한 번의 샷, 한 번의 퍼트가 경기의 흐름을 바꿀 수 있기 때문이다.

아마추어 골퍼인 나도 안다. 연습장에서 잘 맞던 샷이 필드에서는 마음처럼 되지 않을 때가 있고, 자신감이 생기면 갑자기 멋진 샷이 나오기도 한다.

그래서 나는 프로 선수들의 경기에서 우승자만 보는 것이 아니라, 그들이 압박감 속에서 어떻게 경기하는지도 관심 있게 지켜본다.

오늘의 우승자는 요시다 유리였지만, 끝까지 추격한 최혜진과 유해란, 그리고 공동 4위를 기록한 김효주에게도 축하와 응원을 보낸다.

골프에서도, 우리의 삶에서도 다음 순간은 아직 결정되지 않았다.

그러니 오늘의 결과에 너무 일찍 실망하거나 안심하지 말자. 다음 샷이 남아 있으니까! 

요시다의 운이 다했다고 생각했는데!

요시다 유리가 18번 홀에서 버디찬스를 놓치고, 파를 했을 때, 나는 이제 운이 다했다고 생각했다.

뒤에서 경기하던 유해란과 최혜진이 불과 한 타 차이로 추격하고 있었기 때문이다. 둘 중 한 명이 따라잡아 우승하거나, 연장전까지 갈 수도 있겠다고 생각했다.

그런데 골프는 정말 알 수 없는 스포츠다.

요시다가 우승을 놓칠지도 모른다고 생각한 순간, 결국 그녀가 우승을 차지했다.

골프 경기를 보고 있으면 가끔 도박을 하는 것 같은 기분이 든다. 이제 어떻게 될지 알 것 같다가도 갑자기 상황이 바뀐다. 운이 좋은 것 같던 선수가 갑자기 어려워지고, 이제는 운이 다했다고 생각한 선수가 다시 우승하기도 한다.

물론 골프는 운으로만 하는 운동이 아니다. 실력이 가장 중요하다. 하지만 이렇게 팽팽한 경기에서는 마지막 순간까지 무슨 일이 일어날지 아무도 장담할 수 없다.

바로 그 점이 골프를 그토록 흥미진진하게 만드는 것 같다.

그리고 때로는 정말 사람을 애타게 만들기도 한다! ㅎㅎ
