PGA 2026 Presidents Cup - Two Golfers, One Ball? I Finally Understand Foursomes -
I have played golf for quite a while, but there are still some golf formats I don't fully understand.
One of them is Foursomes.
While watching the 2026 Presidents Cup, I suddenly became curious again.
I knew that two golfers play together with one ball and take turns hitting.
But… how exactly does it work?
So I decided to learn it properly this time.
And I thought, maybe I'm not the only golfer who knows the word Foursomes but cannot explain it clearly. 😊
First, How Many Players Were in the 2026 Presidents Cup?
This was one of the things I had to clarify first.
There were 24 players in the 2026 Presidents Cup.
🇺🇸 12 players from the United States
🌎 12 players from the International Team
But they played a total of 30 matches.
So:
24 players → 30 matches
The Presidents Cup is not a normal four-round stroke-play tournament.
It is a four-day team match-play competition.
The 2026 Presidents Cup was held from September 24 to 27 at Medinah Country Club in the Chicago area.
How Were the 30 Matches Played?
The 30 matches were divided into three formats.
| Format | Number of Matches |
|---|---|
| Foursomes | 9 |
| Four-ball | 9 |
| Singles | 12 |
| Total | 30 |
The first three days included team matches, and Sunday was all about 12 singles matches.
Each match was worth one point.
In the end, the United States won the Presidents Cup 17–13.
So, What Exactly Is Foursomes?
This is the part I really wanted to understand.
Foursomes = Alternate Shot.
Two golfers form one team and play one ball together.
For example:
Golfer A hits the tee shot.
→ Golfer B hits the second shot.
→ Golfer A hits the third shot.
→ Golfer B hits the fourth shot.
They keep alternating until the ball is holed.
One team. One ball. Two golfers.
When I first thought about this, I had a funny question.
“Then each golfer only hits about half of the shots, right?”
Well… basically, yes. 😄
The two players share all the shots made by their team.
But that does not mean one golfer plays only nine holes and rests.
Both golfers are involved throughout all 18 holes.
Every time you hit the ball, your partner has to play the next shot.
That's the key idea behind Foursomes.
Foursomes vs. Four-ball
This is where it gets even more interesting.
Four-ball is completely different.
In Four-ball, both golfers play their own ball.
Each player completes the hole with their own ball, and the team's better score is used.
So the easiest way to remember it is:
Foursomes
One ball → alternate shots
Four-ball
Two balls → each player plays their own ball → better score counts
Now I finally have it straight. 😊
Why Is Foursomes So Difficult?
In normal golf, if I hit a terrible tee shot, I have to deal with it myself.
But in Foursomes, that's not the case.
If I hit a terrible tee shot,
my partner has to hit the next shot.
And if my partner hits a difficult shot, then I have to deal with the result.
That means Foursomes is not just about individual golf skills.
The two players have to work together.
Your partner has to play the situation you created with your shot.
And then you have to play the situation your partner created.
In a way,
two golfers are creating one round of golf together with one ball.
I think that's what makes Foursomes so fascinating.
The 2026 Presidents Cup Made It Even More Interesting
This year's Presidents Cup had so many famous golfers that I honestly can't believe I missed watching more of it. 😂
The U.S. team included stars such as:
Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, and Patrick Cantlay.
The International Team included:
Hideki Matsuyama, Adam Scott, Sungjae Im, Tom Kim, Si Woo Kim, Min Woo Lee, Corey Conners, and Ryan Fox.
Looking at the player list now, I think I need to go back and watch some highlights on YouTube.
How did I miss this? 😂
And Then Friday's Foursomes Got Really Interesting
The International Team won all five Foursomes matches on Friday.
The score was:
International Team 5 – U.S. Team 0
That gave the International Team a 7–3 overall lead at that point.
And one of those matches featured two Korean players:
Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim
They played against Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele.
And the Korean pair won 4&3.
Two Korean golfers sharing one ball against two major American stars.
Now that I understand Foursomes better, that match sounds even more interesting to me. 😊
But the Next Day Was Different
On Saturday afternoon, the two teams split the Foursomes matches 2–2.
And Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim faced Cantlay and Schauffele again.
This time, the American pair won 2&1.
They won one day.
The other team won the next day.
That's match-play golf.
Even if you beat someone yesterday, nothing guarantees that you will beat them again today.
Golf is funny that way.
What About the Big Stars' Results?
After looking at the final results, I found some interesting numbers.
Tom Kim finished 4–1–0 overall.
Si Woo Kim finished 3–2–0.
Tom Kim went 1–1 in Foursomes, won both of his Four-ball matches, and also won his Singles match.
Si Woo Kim also went 1–1 in Foursomes and won both of his Four-ball matches.
On the U.S. side, Scottie Scheffler finished 3–1, while Chris Gotterup also finished 3–1 and Cameron Young finished 3–2.
In the end, the United States won 17–13 and extended its Presidents Cup winning streak to 11 consecutive victories.
But What About the Prize Money?
I had one more question.
“This is such a big event with so many world-class golfers. How much does the winner get?”
The Presidents Cup is different from a regular PGA TOUR event.
There is no traditional prize purse or individual winner's prize money.
Instead, funds generated through the event are distributed equally among the players, and each player can direct their share to a charity of their choice.
In other words, the players do not simply take the money home as personal prize winnings.
Since the Presidents Cup began in 1994, more than $56.4 million has been directed toward charitable causes.
So rather than asking,
“How much money did each player win?”
the Presidents Cup gives us another question to think about:
“Which team won the Cup?”
and
“How will the players use their share to support charities they care about?”
That makes the Presidents Cup quite different from a regular professional golf tournament. 😊
Now I Finally Understand Foursomes
After looking into it, Foursomes feels much more interesting to me.
Before, I simply thought:
“Two golfers share one ball and take turns.”
Now I realize how different it really is.
I hit a shot.
My partner has to deal with it.
Then my partner hits a shot.
I have to deal with it.
A good shot becomes something we enjoy together.
A bad shot becomes something we have to solve together.
It is very different from playing golf by yourself.
And now, when I see Foursomes at a Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup, I think I'll watch it differently.
“Oh, those two golfers are sharing one ball.”
And then I might wonder:
“How much do they trust each other's shots?”
I used to think golf was mostly an individual sport.
But after learning about Foursomes, I realized there is another kind of golf—
golf you play together.
And honestly, I learned something new this time.
Now I really want to go back and watch the highlights. 😊
KR Version
바로 Foursomes(포섬)이다.
2026 Presidents Cup
|---|---|
| Foursomes
| Four-ball
| Singles
Foursomes = Alternate Shot
A가 티샷
→ B가 두 번째 샷
→ A가 세 번째 샷
Foursomes
Four-ball
2026 Presidents Cup
Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay
Hideki Matsuyama, Adam Scott, Sungjae Im, Tom Kim, Si Woo Kim, Min Woo Lee, Corey Conners, Ryan Fox
International 5 – USA 0
International 7 – USA 3
Tom Kim
