PGA - The Bank of Utah Championship: Why Does This Tournament Matter? - 그런데 이 대회가 왜 중요할까?

I honestly thought the PGA TOUR was over after the Tour Championship.

Then I saw another PGA TOUR event on my golf screen.

“Wait… What is this?” 😄

The Bank of Utah Championship is being played from October 1–4 at Black Desert Resort in Ivins, Utah.

At first, I noticed that many of the big names I usually watch were not playing.

So I wondered,

“Is this just a small tournament after the PGA TOUR season?”

Not exactly.

$6 Million Is Still a Lot of Money

The Bank of Utah Championship has a $6 million purse.

The winner receives $1.08 million, along with 500 FedExCup points.

The runner-up gets $654,000, and third place receives $414,000.

So even though many of the biggest stars are taking a break, this tournament is still a serious competition for the players who are here.

And then I learned something even more interesting.

The PGA TOUR Has a Fall Season

The Tour Championship may be over, but the PGA TOUR continues with the FedExCup Fall.

The 2026 FedExCup Fall consists of seven official tournaments.

These events are important because players are still collecting FedExCup points and working toward their position for the 2027 PGA TOUR season.

For some players, this is not just another tournament.

It can affect their opportunities to play in PGA TOUR events next year.

The PGA TOUR uses the Fall to determine important status for players, including the players who finish inside the Top 100 and retain eligibility for the following season.

So suddenly, this tournament looked very different to me.

Maybe These Players Have More at Stake Than We Think

When we watch golf on TV, we naturally notice the famous players first.

But professional golf is not only about the players we see every week.

For some players in Utah, a strong finish this week could mean:

more money,
more FedExCup points,
and more opportunities in 2027.

Last year, Michael Brennan won this tournament and took home $1.08 million and 500 FedExCup points.

That is certainly not a meaningless tournament. 😊

Golf Has Different Meanings for Different Players

This is what I found interesting.

For a top superstar, skipping a Fall event may simply be part of planning the next season.

But for another player, those same four days could be extremely important.

One player may be chasing a trophy.

Another may be trying to earn $1 million.

Another may be trying to improve his FedExCup position.

And another may simply be trying to make sure he has a place to play next year.

Same golf course.
Same 18 holes.
Very different reasons for playing.

So now I understand.

The Tour Championship was not really the end of the PGA TOUR year.

The FedExCup Fall is a different part of the season, with different players and different things at stake.

And I have to admit—

I learned something new just because I was curious about one golf tournament. 😄

Maybe that is one of the best things about golf.

The more I watch, the more questions I have.
And the more questions I have, the more I learn.

며칠 전까지만 해도 나는
“Tour Championship이 끝났으니 이제 PGA TOUR도 끝난 것 아닌가?”
하고 생각했다.

그런데 골프를 조금 더 들여다보니
아직 PGA TOUR의 가을 시즌이 남아 있었다.

바로 FedExCup Fall이다.

지금 미국 유타주 Ivins의 Black Desert Resort에서는
10월 1일부터 4일까지 Bank of Utah Championship이 열리고 있다.

그런데 TV에서 자주 보던 PGA 스타 선수들이
많이 보이지 않는다.

Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy 같은 최상위 선수들은 이번 대회에 출전하지 않는다.

그래서 처음에는
“아, 조금 작은 대회인가 보다.”
생각했다.

그런데 상금표를 보니 생각이 달라진다. 😊

💰 총상금 $6 million

이번 대회의 총상금은 600만 달러.

우승자는 108만 달러를 받는다.

2위는 $654,000,
3위는 $414,000,
4위는 $294,000,
5위는 $246,000이다.

우승자에게는 상금만 있는 것도 아니다.

FedExCup 포인트 500점도 걸려 있다.

그러니까 선수들에게는
그냥 “PGA TOUR가 끝나기 전에 열리는 작은 가을 대회”가 아니다.

🍂 FedExCup Fall은 왜 중요할까?

PGA TOUR는 Tour Championship 이후에도
가을에 공식 대회를 계속한다.

2026년 FedExCup Fall은 7개 공식 대회로 구성되어 있고,
이 기간 동안 선수들은 FedExCup 순위와 우선순위를 높여
2027 시즌에 더 많은 출전 기회를 확보하기 위해 경쟁한다.

특히 플레이오프 종료 시점에
FedExCup 51위 이하였던 선수들에게는
가을 대회에서 얻는 포인트가 중요하다.

PGA TOUR 공식 설명에 따르면
가을 시즌은 다음 시즌의 Top 100 자격을 결정하는 중요한 기간이기도 하다.

Top 100에 들어가면 다음 시즌 Full-Field Events에 대한 출전 자격을 확보할 수 있다.
반대로 100위 밖의 선수들에게는 출전 기회를 지키기 위한 경쟁이 이어진다.

🏌️ 그래서 선수들에게는 이런 대회일 수도 있겠다

우리가 보기에는

“유명한 선수들이 많이 안 나오는 대회”

일 수 있지만,

어떤 선수에게는

$1.08 million을 받을 수 있는 기회이고,
500 FedExCup 포인트를 얻을 수 있는 기회이며,
2027년 자신의 PGA TOUR 생활을 더 안정적으로 만들 수 있는 기회다.

실제로 지난해 이 대회에서 우승한 Michael Brennan은
우승과 함께 $1.08 million과 500 FedExCup 포인트를 얻었고,
우승으로 PGA TOUR에서의 자격도 크게 달라졌다.

그리고 2027년은 조금 특별하다

2027년은 PGA TOUR의 새로운 경쟁 구조로 넘어가기 위한 전환의 해이기도 하다.

PGA TOUR가 발표한 새로운 제도에 따르면

선수마다 같은 18홀을 걸어도
그들이 걸고 있는 것이 서로 다르다는 생각이 든다.

누군가에게는 우승 경쟁이고,
누군가에게는 상금이고,
누군가에게는 FedExCup 포인트이고,
또 누군가에게는 내년 PGA TOUR에서 계속 뛰기 위한 싸움이다.

그래서 이번 Bank of Utah Championship을 보면서
조금 새로운 것을 알게 됐다.

Tour Championship이 끝났다고
PGA TOUR가 끝나는 것은 아니었다.

어쩌면 어떤 선수들에게는
오히려 지금부터가
더 중요한 가을일지도 모르겠다.

골프도 인생도 참 비슷하다.

남들이 보기에는
“이제 끝난 것 같은데?”

다음 시즌을 준비하는 사람도 있으니까. 😊
