I have been watching more golf on TV lately, and I kept seeing two names:

PGA TOUR and DP World Tour.

I knew the PGA TOUR, of course. But the DP World Tour kept appearing on my screen, and I started wondering:

What exactly is the DP World Tour?

And why do I sometimes see the same players on both tours?

So I looked into it.

Two Different Tours

The PGA TOUR is the major men's professional golf tour based in the United States.

The DP World Tour is the tour formerly known as the European Tour. It is based in Europe but now travels around the world.

So, in the simplest terms:

PGA TOUR = U.S.-based

DP World Tour = Europe-based and global

They are separate tours, but they are not completely disconnected.

That is the part I found interesting.

And Then There Is the Money

The difference becomes even clearer when we look at prize money.

The PGA TOUR has a much larger overall prize-money pool.

In 2026, the PGA TOUR's regular-season prize money is around $474 million, while the DP World Tour has around $158 million, excluding the four men's major championships.

That means the PGA TOUR's total purse is roughly three times larger.

But the DP World Tour is certainly not a small tour.

For example, many regular DP World Tour events offer several million dollars in total prize money, and its top Rolex Series events have purses around $9 million.

The PGA TOUR, however, has events with much larger purses.

Some of its Signature Events have $20 million purses, and THE PLAYERS Championship has reached $25 million.

So I began to understand why the PGA TOUR feels like it operates on a different financial scale.

Then Why Do They Work Together?

This was the part I really wanted to understand.

The two tours are independent, but they also have cooperative relationships.

One good example is the Genesis Scottish Open, which is jointly sanctioned by the PGA TOUR and the DP World Tour.

That means players from both tours can compete in the same tournament.

So when I see a player on the PGA TOUR one week and then on the DP World Tour, it is not necessarily unusual.

The professional golf world is much more connected than I had realized.

Different Tours, One Global Golf World

The PGA TOUR has the FedExCup as its season-long competition.

The DP World Tour has the Race to Dubai.

They have different schedules, rankings, and structures, but top players can move between the two tours and compete in important events connected to both.

And the DP World Tour is much more global than its old name, European Tour, might suggest.

It now holds tournaments in many countries around the world.

So the next time I see DP World Tour on TV, I will not wonder what it is anymore.

I will simply think:

PGA TOUR — the U.S.-based giant.

DP World Tour — the European-based global tour.

Different tours.

Different prize-money scales.

But increasingly connected.

And somehow, the more I watch golf, the more questions I have.

I guess that is one reason I still enjoy learning about it.

Golf is never quite finished teaching me something new.

요즘 골프 경기를 TV로 자주 보고 있다.

그런데 어느 순간부터 PGA TOUR뿐만 아니라 DP World Tour라는 이름도 자주 보인다.

처음에는 그냥 유럽에서 열리는 골프 투어인가 보다 했다.

그런데 보다 보니 PGA TOUR에서 보던 선수들이 DP World Tour에도 나오고, 어떤 대회는 두 투어가 공동으로 개최하기도 한다.

갑자기 궁금해졌다.

PGA TOUR와 DP World Tour는 도대체 어떤 관계일까?

그래서 한번 찾아봤다.

PGA TOUR와 DP World Tour는 다른 투어다

가장 간단하게 말하면,

PGA TOUR = 미국을 기반으로 하는 남자 프로골프 투어

DP World Tour = 유럽을 기반으로 전 세계에서 대회를 개최하는 남자 프로골프 투어

이다.

DP World Tour는 원래 European Tour(유러피언 투어)라는 이름이었다.

2022년부터 DP World가 타이틀 파트너가 되면서 지금의 DP World Tour라는 이름을 사용하고 있다.

그러니까 DP World라는 회사가 새로운 골프 투어를 만든 것이 아니라, 기존 European Tour가 이름을 바꾼 것이라고 이해하면 쉽다.

그런데 상금 차이가 꽤 크다

두 투어를 비교하면서 또 하나 눈에 들어온 것이 바로 상금이었다.

2026년 기준으로 보면 PGA TOUR의 전체 상금 규모가 DP World Tour보다 훨씬 크다.

PGA TOUR는 정규 시즌 상금 규모가 약 4억 7,400만 달러 수준이고, DP World Tour는 남자 메이저 대회를 제외하고 약 1억 5,800만 달러 수준이다.

대략적으로 보면 PGA TOUR가 약 3배 정도 큰 규모다.

하지만 그렇다고 DP World Tour의 상금이 작은 것은 아니다.

DP World Tour의 주요 대회들은 수백만 달러의 총상금을 걸고 열리고, 최고 등급인 Rolex Series 대회들은 약 900만 달러 규모의 상금을 제공한다.

반면 PGA TOUR에는 총상금 2,000만 달러 규모의 Signature Event들이 있고, THE PLAYERS Championship은 총상금이 2,500만 달러에 이른다.

이렇게 비교해 보니 왜 PGA TOUR의 상금 규모가 유난히 크게 느껴졌는지 알 것 같다.

그런데 왜 같은 선수들이 양쪽에서 보일까?

여기서부터가 재미있었다.

두 투어는 기본적으로 서로 다른 투어이지만, 서로 연결되어 있는 부분이 있다.

대표적인 예가 Genesis Scottish Open이다.

이 대회는 PGA TOUR와 DP World Tour가 공동으로 개최하는 대회다.

그래서 PGA TOUR에서 보던 세계적인 선수들이 DP World Tour 대회에 출전하는 모습을 볼 수 있다.

처음에는

"어? 이 선수 PGA TOUR 선수 아니야?"

싶었는데,

이제는

"아, 두 투어가 연결되어 있구나."

하고 이해할 수 있게 됐다.

두 투어의 시즌 경쟁도 다르다

PGA TOUR에는 시즌 성적을 겨루는 FedExCup이 있고,

DP World Tour에는 Race to Dubai가 있다.

각자의 투어에서 시즌을 치르고 랭킹 경쟁을 하지만, 세계적인 선수들은 두 투어의 여러 중요한 대회에서 모습을 보이기도 한다.

그래서 TV로 골프를 보다 보면 두 투어가 생각보다 자주 겹쳐 보이는 것이다.

PGA TOUR는 미국, DP World Tour는 세계

또 하나 재미있었던 것은 DP World Tour라는 이름 때문에 처음에는 유럽에서만 경기가 열릴 것이라고 생각했다는 것이다.

그런데 지금의 DP World Tour는 이름 그대로 상당히 글로벌한 투어다.

유럽을 중심으로 하면서도 아시아, 중동, 아프리카 등 여러 지역에서 대회가 열린다.

그래서 이제 TV에서 DP World Tour라는 이름이 나와도 낯설지 않을 것 같다.

아주 간단하게 정리하면

PGA TOUR

DP World Tour
유럽 기반, 글로벌 투어
→ PGA TOUR보다 전체 상금 규모는 작지만 상당히 큰 투어

그리고 두 투어는 서로 완전히 별개의 세계가 아니라 공동 개최 등을 통해 연결되어 있다.

골프를 보다 보면 처음에는 선수만 보다가,

어느 순간에는 대회 이름이 궁금해지고,

그다음에는 투어가 궁금해지고,

또 상금과 랭킹까지 궁금해진다.

나도 요즘 그렇게 하나씩 알아가는 중이다.

골프는 참 이상하다.
한 경기를 보고 끝나는 것이 아니라, 또 하나의 질문을 남긴다.

그리고 그 질문을 따라가다 보면 골프의 세계가 조금씩 더 넓어진다.
