Ruby Must Have Been a Princess in Her Previous Life - 루비는 전생에 공주였나 봅니다

It rained heavily in Jeju today.

I went to the driving range and enjoyed hitting golf balls. But the rain became so heavy that I started worrying about Ruby and Rich at home. After about 40 minutes of practice, I decided to head home.

Luckily, both dogs were safe and dry. They seemed to have stayed in the storage shed to avoid the rain.

Then I thought about Ruby.

Ruby never gets wet if she can help it.

She loves going outside, but she hates wet grass. She may go there once to do her business, but after that, she refuses to walk on the same wet grass again.

Instead, she carefully steps on stones or finds dry places to walk.

And muddy puddles? Absolutely not!

Usually, Ruby follows me wherever I go without any trouble. But when she sees a dirty or wet place, she suddenly has very strong opinions.

I can almost hear her saying,

“Mom, I love going outside. But surely you don't expect me to walk through THAT!”

It makes me laugh every time.

Ruby is also surprisingly clean. Her body rarely smells, and even the inside of her ears usually looks very clean. Sometimes she seems as if she has just had a bath.

When we come home, she knows that I need to wipe her body before she can enter the living room.

She doesn't particularly enjoy having every little corner of her paws cleaned, but she accepts the routine. Once she has been wiped down, she can come inside.

Ruby is not just a quiet, well-behaved dog. She has her own preferences, and she knows exactly what she likes and dislikes.

Rich, on the other hand, prefers spending time in the garden. After a walk, he usually lies comfortably under the long roof in front of the living room.

Even when I go outside, he often stays where he is and simply watches me.

They live in the same house, but they have completely different lifestyles.

Ruby loves a clean indoor space, while Rich enjoys the garden and his favorite spot under the roof.

They sometimes have disagreements over food, so I remove things like dog chews from the yard to prevent possible fights. But most of the time, they enjoy life in their own ways.

And today, even with the rain pouring down, Ruby managed to stay dry.

The more I think about it, the more I believe she must have been a princess in her previous life.

Perhaps she once lived in a royal palace and was somehow reborn here on Jeju Island.

One thing is certain, though.

Even in her current home, she still has very strict standards.

No wet grass. No dirty puddles. And no entering the living room before being properly cleaned.

Honestly, she is even cleaner than I am!

I know you are a Jindo mix, but sometimes your behavior makes me wonder.

And on a day when the rain poured down so heavily, I was simply happy to come home and find both of you safe and sound.

오늘 제주에는 비가 억수같이 쏟아졌다.

골프 연습장에 가서 시원하게 공을 때리다가, 비가 너무 많이 와서 루비와 리치가 걱정되기 시작했다. 결국 40분 정도만 연습하고 집으로 돌아왔다.

다행히 두 녀석은 창고에서 비를 잘 피하고 있었는지 젖지 않고 얌전히 있었다.

그런데 문득 루비가 생각났다.

루비는 비를 절대 맞지 않는다.

밖에 나가는 것은 무척 좋아하지만, 젖은 잔디는 싫어한다. 잔디가 젖어 있으면 딱 한 번 볼일을 보고는 다시 그쪽으로 가지 않는다. 돌이 놓인 곳이나 젖지 않은 땅을 골라 조심스럽게 발을 디딘다.

더러운 물웅덩이는 말할 것도 없다. 절대로 발을 담그지 않는다.

평소에는 내가 가자고 하면 어디든 얌전히 따라오는 녀석인데, 더럽거나 젖은 곳 앞에서는 자기 의견이 아주 확실하다.

'엄마, 산책은 좋아요. 그런데 저런 곳은 제가 갈 곳이 아니에요.'

루비가 정말 그렇게 생각하는 것 같아서 웃음이 난다.

게다가 루비는 몸도 늘 깨끗하다. 목욕을 자주 하지 않아도 몸에서 냄새가 거의 나지 않고, 귀 안쪽도 늘 깨끗한 편이다. 마치 방금 목욕을 마친 강아지 같다.

집에 돌아오면 몸을 깨끗하게 닦아야 거실에 들어올 수 있다는 것도 잘 알고 있다. 발바닥 구석구석을 닦는 것은 조금 싫어하지만, 전체적으로 닦고 나면 거실에 들어간다.

그렇다고 루비가 얌전하기만 한 것은 아니다. 밖에 나가는 것도 좋아하고, 자기 취향도 분명하다. 다만 세상을 살아가는 자기만의 기준이 있는 것 같다.

반면 리치는 마당에서 지내는 것을 더 좋아한다. 산책을 마치면 거실 앞 긴 처마 밑에 편하게 누워 쉰다. 내가 마당으로 나와도 굳이 따라오지 않고, 자기가 누워 있던 자리에서 나를 구경하는 경우가 많다.

같은 집에서 사는 두 녀석인데도 생활 방식은 이렇게 다르다.

루비는 깨끗한 실내를 좋아하고, 리치는 넓은 마당과 처마 밑을 좋아한다.

먹을 것이 있을 때는 서로 신경전을 벌이기도 해서 내가 미리 치워 놓아야 하지만, 평소에는 각자 좋아하는 방식으로 살아간다.

오늘처럼 비가 억수같이 쏟아지는 날에도 루비는 젖지 않고 비를 피했다.

아무리 생각해도 루비는 전생에 어느 나라의 공주였던 것 같다.

혹시 왕궁에서 살다가 제주도에 환생한 것은 아닐까?

그런데 한 가지는 확실하다.

지금 루비가 사는 집에서도 자기만의 기준은 여전히 엄격하다.

젖은 잔디는 안 되고, 더러운 물은 안 되고, 깨끗하게 닦은 뒤에야 거실에 들어갈 수 있다.

나보다 더 깔끔한 것 같다.

루비야, 전생에 정말 공주였니?

엄마는 네가 진도 믹스견이라는 사실보다 네 행동이 더 신기하다.

오늘도 네 덕분에 한참 웃었다.

그리고 비가 쏟아지는 날, 너희 둘이 무사히 잘 지내고 있는 것을 확인할 수 있어서 참 다행이었다.
