What on Earth Is Golf? -

Thank Goodness I'm Not a Professional Golfer!

Golf can drive you crazy.

I really mean it.

Today, I followed the final round of the Aramco Korea Championship. I was especially interested in two Korean players I like, Sung Hyun Park and Hyo Joo Kim.

Unfortunately, they were hardly shown on TV.

So, in the afternoon, I went to bed and enjoyed a good nap. (Smile)

But when I saw the final results, I had several things to think about.

Miyu Yamashita won the tournament with an amazing score of 22 under par. Hyo Joo Kim played a wonderful final round, shooting six under par. She finished at 13 under par and tied for seventh place.

Sung Hyun Park finished at 10 under par.

Although she did not win, she gave her fans some exciting moments to remember.

She made an eagle on the 17th hole, a par-five, in both the second and third rounds!

An eagle on the same hole two days in a row!

Golf fans know how exciting that must have been. A birdie is wonderful, but an eagle brings a completely different kind of joy.

Interestingly, Yamashita also made an eagle on that very same 17th hole in the final round. That hole gave us another exciting moment on the last day.

Charley Hull also made an eagle on the par-five third hole, adding another highlight to the tournament.

Throughout the event, the players gave golf fans plenty of exciting moments, especially on the par-five holes.

Of course, I was sorry that Sung Hyun Park did not win.

But I believe this tournament gave us reasons to look forward to her future performances. Her back-to-back eagles on the same hole were certainly memorable.

In golf, one tournament does not tell the whole story. Not winning this time does not mean there will be no more chances in the future.

I will continue to look forward to Sung Hyun Park's next tournament.

One player may win the trophy, but the fans' hope for the next tournament never has to end.

And yet, golf is such a strange game.

Every stroke matters. A single putt can change the rankings.

The ball rolls toward the hole. It looks as if it will drop in any second.

But then, it just misses the edge.

Oh, how frustrating!

And on another day, those same putts roll straight into the hole as if they were the easiest thing in the world.

What on earth changes?

The golfer's skill? The condition of the green? The speed and direction of the ball?

Or is golf simply like that?

As an amateur golfer, I know a little about this frustration. But I can only imagine how much stress professional golfers experience when they are fighting for a tournament victory.

Today, I felt a little of that exhaustion just by watching them.

So I came to one important conclusion.

Thank goodness I'm not a professional golfer!

I can enjoy my golf, get frustrated over a missed putt, take a nap, and try again another day.

I don't have to win a tournament or prove anything to the world.

I just want to enjoy the game, find my own swing, and feel happy when the ball goes where I want it to go.

Of course, it would be wonderful if every putt went straight into the hole! (Smile)

But what on earth is golf?

Honestly, I still don't know.

Yet, the next time I play, I will probably pick up my clubs and try to find the answer one more time.

Maybe that is what golf does to us. It drives us crazy, but somehow, we keep coming back for more.

Golf and Life Are Not Always Under Our Control

The more I think about golf, the more I feel that it is a lot like life.

We can work hard, prepare carefully, and do our best. Yet, things do not always go the way we want.

Life is like that. And golf is like that, too.

Today, I found myself thinking about the lives of professional golfers.

I imagine their lives can be incredibly difficult. Every tournament brings another challenge. Every shot matters, and every result becomes part of their public record.

I sometimes think it must be especially hard for players who were once at the top.

When you have won major tournaments and experienced the feeling of being one of the best in the world, how do you accept a different result today?

How do you let go of the past without giving up on yourself?

It must take tremendous mental strength to keep competing, even when the results are no longer what they used to be.

Perhaps the challenge is not simply to play better golf. Perhaps it is also to accept who you are today, rather than constantly comparing yourself with who you were yesterday.

Thinking about this made me appreciate the world's top players even more.

Scottie Scheffler and Nelly Korda are extraordinary golfers. Their skills are amazing, but what impresses me just as much is their ability to keep performing at such a high level.

Staying at the top is a challenge of its own.

The more I watch golf, the more I realize that professional golfers are not simply playing a game. They are also dealing with pressure, expectations, changing results, and the difficult task of believing in themselves again and again.

And that is why I feel so much respect for them.

Golf reminds me that we cannot control every result in life. We can only keep learning, keep trying, and find a way to live with the results we receive.

Maybe that is why golf touches me so deeply.

It is not just about hitting a small white ball into a hole.

It is also about how we face life when things do not go our way.

KR Version
