When Two Rivers Meet -
While watching a movie, I heard a sentence that stayed with me.
It said that when two people meet, especially when they get married, it is like two rivers coming together. But we should not sacrifice ourselves just to fill the other person's river.
I had never heard this expression before, and I found it very interesting.
In my parents' generation, people often made many sacrifices to support each other. That was how they showed love and kept their marriages together.
But times have changed.
In Korea, many couples now share their wedding expenses equally. At first, this idea felt a little strange to me as someone over 60. But gradually, I began to understand it.
Sharing wedding expenses equally is not just about money. Perhaps it also means that both people want to live as equals after marriage.
Now that I am over 60, I have come to believe that this kind of balance matters in all human relationships, not just marriage.
By balance, I do not mean that everything must be divided exactly in half. I mean a relationship in which neither person always gives or sacrifices more than the other. Both people should feel comfortable with what they give and receive.
When we are young, we may support someone because we believe in their future, even if their situation is difficult at the moment. Things can change as time goes by.
But in the later part of life, I see things a little differently. I find it difficult to believe that a relationship can last when one person must always fill the other person's needs.
I sometimes see the same thing in golf.
Sometimes, someone I play golf with suggests that we share a car to the golf course. They may offer to pick me up or suggest meeting near my home and driving together.
If the round requires about two hours of driving there and back, going together might seem more enjoyable than going alone. We could share the driving and save some money on fuel.
I appreciate the kind thought behind the offer.
However, when we actually travel together, there can be small inconveniences for both people.
When two or three people share a car, it is not always easy to enjoy a quiet ride. Someone may want to keep talking, and the others may feel that they need to follow the conversation.
I enjoy driving. It gives me time to think on my own.
On the way to the golf course, I can quietly imagine how I want to play that day. I think about which clubs to use and what I want to focus on.
On the way home, I can look back on my round. What went well? What could I have done better? What should I work on the next time I practice at the driving range?
Talking with other people can be enjoyable, too. But I also value these quiet moments alone.
Of course, when I drive my own car, I have to pay for the fuel and other car expenses myself. But driving is not a burden to me. I actually enjoy it, and sometimes I even enjoy a little speed.😀💗
After thinking about it many times, I came to a simple conclusion.
I prefer to drive my own car to the golf course and go by myself.
It does not mean that I dislike the people who invite me. It does not mean that I am ungrateful for their kindness, either.
It simply means that, for me, the value of having time alone is greater.
Small experiences like this make me think about relationships.
For one person, sharing a car may be fun and comfortable. For another, traveling alone may feel much better.
Neither choice is right or wrong. We simply have different needs.
When someone shows me kindness, I appreciate it and sometimes accept it gladly. But if that kindness makes me uncomfortable, comes with expectations, or becomes a way to control me, I feel differently.
In that case, I choose to step away from the relationship.
I do not believe that accepting someone's kindness means giving up my freedom or my right to make my own choices.
When two rivers meet, one does not have to disappear into the other.
Wouldn't it be better if both rivers could keep their own paths while flowing alongside each other?
As I grow older, I find comfort in relationships where neither person feels like a burden to the other.
Rather than emptying ourselves to fill someone else's river, perhaps we can let both rivers flow fully, side by side.
That is the kind of relationship I value now.
KR Version
(smile)
