This morning, I suddenly became curious about the name of my favorite coffee drink.
Why do we call it a café latte instead of a coffee latte?
I am 60 years old, and I have enjoyed café lattes for many years. But somehow, I had never really thought about the name!
Whenever I go golfing, I often make a café latte at home and put it in my thermal mug. Sometimes, I stop at a café on the way to the golf course and get one to go.
It has been part of my golfing routine for a long time.
And today, on a rainy morning, this simple question suddenly came to mind.
Why café latte, not coffee latte?
So, I looked it up.
The original name is Italian: caffè latte. In Italian, caffè means coffee, and latte means milk. Together, they mean coffee with milk.
In English-speaking countries, people often call it a latte for short. You may also see café latte on café menus.
Now I understand why!
It is funny that I have enjoyed this drink for so many years without wondering about its name. And here I am, at 60, discovering something new about something so familiar.
As I write this post, my warm café latte is sitting right beside me.
Outside, the rain is falling. Inside, I am enjoying my coffee and writing about my little discovery.
Nothing special is happening today, but somehow, it feels like a lovely morning.
Maybe life is full of little things we have never really noticed.
We just need to stop for a moment and become curious.
At 60, I am still learning, still discovering, and still enjoying the little things in life.
And now, I think I will take another sip of my café latte. 😊☕️

오늘 아침, 내가 가장 좋아하는 커피 음료의 이름이 갑자기 궁금해졌다.
왜 커피라테가 아니라 카페라테라고 부를까?
나는 올해 60세다. 카페라테를 오랫동안 즐겨 마셨지만, 이상하게도 그 이름에 대해서는 한 번도 깊이 생각해 본 적이 없었다!
골프 라운딩을 가는 날이면 집에서 직접 카페라테를 만들어 보온 머그에 담아 가곤 한다. 가끔은 골프장으로 가는 길에 카페에 들러 테이크아웃하기도 한다.
카페라테는 오랫동안 내 골프 일상의 한 부분이었다.
그런데 오늘, 비가 내리는 아침에 문득 이런 궁금증이 생겼다.
왜 커피라테가 아니라 카페라테일까?
그래서 찾아보았다.
원래 이름은 이탈리아어인 caffè latte다. 이탈리아어로 caffè는 커피, latte는 우유라는 뜻이다. 두 단어를 합치면 우유가 들어간 커피라는 의미가 된다.
영어권에서는 간단하게 latte라고 부르기도 하고, 카페 메뉴에서 café latte라는 표기를 볼 수도 있다.
이제야 그 이유를 알게 되었다!
그렇게 오랫동안 즐겨 마셨으면서도 이름에 대해서는 한 번도 궁금해하지 않았다는 사실이 재미있다. 그런데 60세가 된 오늘, 이렇게 익숙한 것에서 새로운 사실을 발견했다.
이 글을 쓰고 있는 지금도 따뜻한 카페라테가 내 옆에 놓여 있다.
밖에는 비가 내리고, 나는 따뜻한 커피를 마시며 나의 작은 발견에 관한 글을 쓰고 있다.
오늘 특별한 일이 일어나는 것은 아니지만, 왠지 기분 좋은 아침이다.
어쩌면 우리 삶에는 아직 알아차리지 못한 작은 것들이 많이 숨어 있는지도 모른다.
잠시 멈추어 호기심을 가져보면 된다.
60세에도 나는 여전히 배우고, 새로운 것을 발견하고, 삶의 작은 즐거움을 누리고 있다.
이제 카페라테를 한 모금 더 마셔야겠다. 😊☕️
