Why Is My Ordinary Day Always So Busy? -

These days, I sometimes ask myself,

“What did I actually do today?”

I didn't go anywhere special.
I didn't do anything extraordinary.

And yet, somehow,
the day disappears so quickly.

So I started thinking about what I actually do.

Before taking the dogs for their morning walk,
I turn on the robot vacuum.

Then I take my two dogs for a walk.

When we come home,
I brush their fur.

I make mixed-grain rice,
wash and cook some bean sprouts,
season them,
and fry a couple of eggs.

I eat breakfast, take my medicine,
wash the dishes,
and make myself a cup of coffee.

And somehow,
a good part of the morning is already gone.

Then there is something else
that comes with having two dogs.

Opening the door.

They want to go outside.

They come and stand next to me,
so I open the door.

A little later,
they want to come back inside.

So they stand at the door and bark.

I go and open the door again.

A little later...

They want to go outside again.

Open the door.

Then back inside.

Open the door again.

With two dogs,
this can happen quite a few times a day.

I have no idea how many times
I open and close that door. 😂

And of course,
I have to prepare their food,
check their water,
give them treats,
take them for walks,
and brush their fur.

When the weather is nice,
I also bring all their bedding outside
and let it dry in the sunshine.

Come to think of it,
living with two dogs creates a surprising amount of work.

Sometimes they even create a little project for me
while I am away.

Ruby has recently figured out
how to pull apart the large fabric screen
at the entrance to the living room.

Ruby is actually a very quiet dog.

When she wants to go outside,
she doesn't bark.

She simply stands quietly beside my bed.

When I wake up,
I know exactly what she wants.

But sometimes,
if I am sleeping very deeply,
I guess Ruby decides to solve the problem herself. 😂

When I am away from home
and the wind gets strong,
she sometimes seems to get nervous
and wants to come back inside from the yard.

So she has pulled apart the fabric screen
and gone back and forth through it.

Luckily, she doesn't chew it badly.

She simply pulls the fabric out along the edge.

So when I come home,
I just put it back into place.

“Ruby... did you do this again?” 😂

And then I fix it.

Yesterday, I had another little project.

Since the dogs spend a lot of time in the living room,
their fur often gets caught in the fans.

I am quite sensitive to smells and indoor air,
so I don't like leaving things like that.

So I took apart two fans.

I removed all the fur,
cleaned everything,
let the parts dry,
and put the fans back together.

The robot vacuum sometimes needs surgery, too.

When dog fur gets stuck inside,
I have to take it apart,
remove the fur,
clean everything,
and put it back together.

Then there is laundry.

Wash it.
Hang it outside.
Bring it in when it is dry.
Fold it.
Put everything away.

I also water my plants and my little vegetable garden twice a day.

And I teach my students.

I go to the golf practice range.

I go swimming.

And then, suddenly,

the day is over.

So I ask myself again,

“What did I actually do today?”

But when I think about it,
I didn't do nothing.

I spent the whole day doing little things.

Cooking.

Washing dishes.

Doing laundry.

Opening the door for the dogs.

Opening it again.

Brushing their fur.

Fixing the screen.

Cleaning the fans.

Watering the garden.

And somehow,
the whole day has disappeared.

Of course, on really busy days,
I sometimes stop and buy kimbap on my way home from swimming.

Sometimes I buy cooked barbecue, too.

Maybe once or twice a month.

Most of the time,
I prefer to make simple meals myself.

But when I am really tired,
I think it is perfectly fine to make life a little easier.

And once or twice a week,
I sometimes reach my limit.

I spend half a day doing absolutely nothing.

I turn on the TV
and just rest.

Those days feel good, too.

Maybe this is what an ordinary life is really like.

Nothing particularly exciting happens.

But little things keep happening all day long.

A dog wants the door opened.

The laundry is ready.

It is time to cook.

The plants need water.

A screen needs fixing.

And before I know it,
the day is gone.

So these days, I sometimes laugh and think,

“Why is my ordinary day always so busy?”

Maybe I am simply
living my ordinary days quite busily. 😊

KR Version
